I grew up in the UK and didn’t learn about the significance of this day until a couple of years ago whilst living in America. Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved Black people. This came more than TWO years after the Emancipation Proclamation issued by President Abraham Lincoln. The day represents the ways in which freedom for Black people have been delayed. It is a reminder that “nobody is free until everybody is free”.
