Today’s quote has been inspired by the fact that I have business coaching this afternoon. As a marketing strategist/consultant myself, you would think that investing in business coaching would be unnecessary. But the opposite is true. In my business, I am my own worst enemy and I’m in the process of discovering a cycle of self-sabotage when it comes to success. My business coaches not only keep me accountable (important), but they also help me recognize my behavior patterns (vital). @mariahpcoz recommends “making your business YOU proof”. For me, that means checking in with @inspirebusinesscommunity and @angel.ludwig so I don’t start a new business seconds before I finally see the return on my current one (I’ve done this 100% of the time). What does getting out of your own way look like? I’d love to hear how you’ve accomplished difficult goals in the comments 👇🏼
Since launching Social Strategy Co in Dec of 2016, I’ve changed my service offerings and business plan approximately 29349292. But the one thing I always come back to is teaching. My 1-on-1 services include a lot of teaching, but my goal is to create an online course that is affordable and accessible to a variety of skill and business levels. If I were to draft up a syllabus for a Social Strategy Course, what would you want to see included? What platforms, skills, and strategies do you need help with? Let me know in the comments so I can learn more about what you guys need help with!
I researched articles, watched webinars, and read books all about starting a podcast. They taught me what microphone to buy, what order my content should be announced, what I should talk about, how to market it etc etc etc. I didn’t listen to most of what I was told. Instead, I did a screen recording of my computer, used my old old old iPhone headphones with built in mic, and launched a podcast by the seat of my pants. The #socialstrategyexperimentpodcast is the audio only version of my video blogs, and I officially have 3 episodes ready for you. You can listen and subscribe via the link in my profile 🎉
When I record my video blogs, I can only see my computer screen, not myself. So when I watched back my latest #socialstrategyexperiment, I noticed Reesie was very active on the couch behind me 😂 Napping and bathing herself the whole time 🙄 So if you like cat videos AND social strategy, you’ll get both in my recent episode: How to Update Your Instagram Bio to Grow Your Audience. Watch it via the link in my profile.
Do you need help crafting your Instagram bio? I put together an easy formula that allows you to plug in your content, and update your bio in minutes. Download the free worksheet in my recent blog post, link in profile. You can also view the formula on that blog post, or watch the video to learn the in's and out's of the strategy. I went from gaining 11ish followers a week to getting more than 25 after this one tweak. Get access to all of the resources via the link in my profile!
What should I say in my Instagram Bio? Have you ever wondered this? I have an easy Social Bio Formula on the newest episode of the #socialstrategyexperiment, How to Update Your Instagram Bio to Grow Your Audience.! I had so much fun putting together this video, as I know it's a topic that's discussed regularly, but we rarely have insight on what's correct. I shared 3 popular bio formulas, and then shared my own version as well! Find out how I more than doubled my weekly follower growth with this one simple tweak and easy-to-use formula for updating your Instagram Bio. Link in profile!
Yesterday, I wound up talking to 3 different women about social media and business. I admitted that while I loved teaching business owners how to use this important tool for growing their brand, I often felt like a sell-out when posting on social media. Even typing this caption has me wondering if I am cheapening the very conversation I am writing about. But what I discovered is that a lot of women struggle to put themselves out there online, especially on Instagram. We either feel like too many other people are already doing what we want to do, or that self-promotion feels icky and almost manipulative. The timing of these conversations couldn't have been more perfect. I had just listened to a @julssolomon podcast featuring @nicolasalter__loves_life_. Nicola described holding ourselves back as selfish. Not sharing our gifts with the world because of fear or lack of self-worth is actually selfish. So I am currently on the journey of finding my voice and sharing it on a platform to better my community and help business owners succeed online. If you have felt a similar way, I would love to hear from you! This topic will likely become a video blog/podcast episode in the near future, and I would love to feature quotes from my tribe here on Insta. Let me know what's keeping you from sharing on social in the comments below 👇🏼
I happened to stumble upon the notebook that has my 2018 goals in it. If you know anything about me, you know I am typically using 3-5 notebooks at one time 😳 My #1 goal was to start a weekly video series. Which actually happened (link in profile). Even though I recorded my first video 3 separate times to “get my voice right”, I finally did it. I have two whole episodes up, and am outlining the third now. My word for 2018 was originally “Embrace”, but I’ve since changed it to “Audacity”. It’s weird/humbling/exciting/interesting to look back a month and see things happening. Small progress is still progress. Have you started hacking away at your scary goals? And if you have a word for 2018, I would love to hear it in the comments below! 👇🏼
Monday morning: usually involves me debating working from home on my couch all day or going into my coworking space (and putting pants on). Coworking space and pants won this week. But there’s always next week! Anyone enjoying a good sweatpants Monday work sesh?

Most business owners post on social media sporadically without any strategy, intention, or goals behind their posts. I’m super guilty of this even though I’m a social strategist 🤷🏼♀️ But the one thing I always come back to is this content planner. I write out all of the things I could be talking about online, and then choose 7 topics to share consistently. Then, if I’m feeling like an over-achiever, I’ll assign 1 topic to each day of the week, so I always know what to post about on a given day. For example, when I pick up my phone and think “Sh*t, I haven’t posted on IG for 2 weeks...” I can look at my planner and easily pick up a topic. Exhibit A: this post 👆🏼To get this free download, click the link in my profile and enter your email! You’ll get an email with the PDF instantly.
Are you worried about Instagram engagement? If you’re like most of us business owners, you probably noticed a drop since the recent algorithm change. I struggle with getting engagement, especially because my posts have been so inconsistent lately 🙈 But fear not! With an idea from @lizfrandsen, I tested and found a great way to find what content your audience is engaging with the most, and why! Check it out in my new video series, Social Strategy Experiment. The link is in my profile > scroll to blog > first post 👌🏼 If you already tried it, how’s it working for you? Let me know in the comments!
Teaching has always been at the heart of my business, and I’m so excited to finally launch a new way to share social strategy tips with my fav people - business owners! Service based business owners: do you ever feel like you’re running two businesses? I had this thought over the weekend when I put client work aside and focused on reading about and improving the strategy of my business. Now it’s Monday, and I’m back to client management and daily task upkeep. Being a small business owner means wearing 39282025 hats, which as a creative, can be fun and always exciting. But when your business is growing FAST, it can also feel overwhelming. All that to say, I am HIRING 🎉 I am looking for an assistant to help with social media content, blogging, email marketing, photo editing, podcast management, and more. This is a great opportunity if you are looking to grow your own business in these areas while getting paid. Training is included, but I am hoping you’ll have familiarity with programs like WordPress and Photoshop. I would prefer to have a local assistant (Lancaster, PA), but would be willing to create a remote position for the right candidate. DM your email to get the full job description. Tag friends that would be a great fit 🎉
