Remember Rob? • Diagnosed with terminal stage 4 lung cancer 2 and a half years ago. • Last Friday, Rob and I skinned and skied a couple thousand feet of snowy elevation in the Colorado backcountry. His first time on skis since his diagnoses. We joked, laughed, cried and gave thanks to the universe. • Throughout Rob’s journey of recovery, he researched and adopted alternative healing practices, drastically adapted his diet, managed fear and rewrote his own narrative. • Rob is a good illustration for all of us on how to not victimize a circumstance. Take control. Write the script. And fuck cancer. • #fuckcancer #bestdayever #getoutside #coloRADo #backcountry #backcountryskiing #earnyourturns #skimountaineering #skimo #noexcuses
On your right you will take note of me... dressed in my super cozy @mountainhardwear 8,000 meter downsuit, my super warm @millet_mountain 8,000 meter boots and my sweet oxygen system. All while climbing over the Geneva Spur around 26k feet on #Everest. Tough guy, right? • To your left you will take note of my Sherpa friend, Apa. He’s wearing an old down jacket with duct tape on it and feathers flyin all over the place, he’s carrying an oxygen tank but he’s not even breathing it... he’s carrying it up for our team to use on our pending summit push. But best of all... Apa’s got on blue jeans. And they’re not even Levi’s... they’re probably Jordache. Apa is wearing 4 pairs of Jordache jeans at 26,000ft. • And you know what becomes real clear... the guy on the left is a stud. The guy on the right has a long way to go. • The story of the #sherpa is well documented with conditions, respect and opportunity improving over the years. Back in 2001 when this photo was taken... many of the Sherpas would take the gear allocation $ they received prior to an expedition and use it to support the basic needs of their family and just keep wearing the same basic gear over and over. I totally get it. And because they were/are absolute studs, they were fine with wearing marginal gear. • I think we should all aspire to be more Sherpa in how we operate. Kind, compassionate, hard working, resourceful, dedicated, selfless and tough as hell. • #sherpatude #sherpaattitude #sherpa #nepal #everest #mountain #mountaineering #alpine #climbing #himalayas #beofservice #betough #suckitup #adventure #travel • 📸—> I think @charley.mace snapped this one.
I’ve lived in Colorado for 30 yrs and can count the number of seasons on one ✋🏼 that I’ve gotten in 5 days of ⛷ prior to December 1st. What a sweet and much needed treat to have this much ❄️ this early. • Finding friends, powder and chilly temps in the backcountry yesterday with @charley.mace @bequitahall @krakauernotwriting and the always hard chargin Roka Dog. • #earnyourturns #backcountryskiing #getoutside #playoutside #mountains #skiing #coloRADo
As I sit here, up in a tree stand, on our farm, deep in the Arkansas Delta, under this fat moon on this Day of Thanks... I am flooded with gratitude. An appreciation for health, food, shelter, community, mountains, oceans, deserts and most of all... family. • In spite of what we hear and read everyday... we are all in this together. Far as I can tell, we get one ticket to ride on this fun ass merry-go-round. I am grateful for it and will express my gratitude far and wide. A big fat thank-you-hell-yeah to the universe. • #thanksgiving #thankful #gratitude #family #familygoals #deerstand #treestand #arkansas #hunter #appreciationpost #appreciation #adventure #travel #getoutside • 📸—> fam and I feeling grateful deep in the Absaroka Wilderness of Wyoming.
One of my favorite photos of all time... 2 dudes: 3 legs. Walking through Pheriche with a very bad man. Matt lost his leg in a helicopter crash several moons ago while making the world safer as a Delta Force operator. He continues to stand up and operate in spite of his injury. • Back in 2010, a few of us decided to repay a debt of gratitude and take some remarkable injured veterans (including Matt) on a mountaineering expedition to Nepal for an attempt to climb a 20,000ft peak. Little did we know that trip would lay the groundwork for what would go on to become the No Barriers Warriors program. Eight years later we have impacted thousands of veterans through our programming. • @nobarrierswarriors improves the lives of veterans with disabilities through curriculum-based experiences in challenging environments. • If you are or know a veteran that could use a reset... an opportunity to reestablish a sense of camaraderie and purpose... drop a google search for No Barriers Warriors and get involved. Our commitment to saying thank you will be ongoing to all that have served. Much gratitude to all that have given so much. • #veteransday #veterans #veteran #thankyou #beofservice #gratitude #nepal #mountaineering #climbing #trekking #adventure #travelblogger #travelphotography
Rarely a day goes by that someone doesn’t reach out to me inquiring about how they can get involved in the field of austere medicine. Well, here’s a way to provide support whether you’re medically trained or not... and potentially win 2 free round trip flights. That’s right... do good and get free shit. • I have volunteered with @nycmedics for 4 years now and believe they embrace the idea of being the tip of the spear when it comes to disaster medicine. Many of you know... this is the org that I refer medically trained personnel that want to volunteer. They do great work and when the next disaster calls, you can bet I will raise my hand to hop on a plane and go be of service with these good people. • They are currently running an ambassador campaign to support the operation and are offering up 2 FREE JetBlue round-trip tickets. Go to the @gofundme link in my profile and donate any amount you want. Even $5 gets you in the running. If we reach the minimum... I will randomly draw a name for the free flights. • Help us make the world a better place 🙏 • #beofservice #austeremedicine #physicianassistant #medicine #nepal #bekind #bethoughtful #thinkofothers #volunteer #volunteering #disasterrelief #disastermedicine
In the month since I sat with sweaty palms through a pre screening of @jimmy_chin & his team capturing @alexhonnold climbing off the rocket ship and on to the moon... not a day has gone by that I don't reflect on the layers and optics it took to accomplish that mind bending feat. • For the one fella that is somehow unaware... #FreeSolo documents the journey that Alex took in considering, planning, training and ultimately executing the monumental effort of climbing El Capitan without a rope. • Among other heady topics, the film asks us to consider the risk/consequence relationship. Risk being the chance that something negative will happen and consequence being that negative result itself. Alex showed us that with absolute dedication to a challenging objective, it's possible to mitigate risk, all the while understanding that the consequence will still be profound. The subjective optic we all carry with us provides us each with an opportunity to accept the ratio of risk/consequence. I've done my share of what the world would call 'crazy ass shit'... although it all seemed fairly reasonable to me simply because I was prepared and ready for the task. Although the consequences have been high, I have been able to manage the risk through planning & preparation. Alex takes this strategy to the next level. Dream, plan, train, execute. Repeat. It's a solid learning opportunity for all of us that with enough dedication, we can aim high and manage the risk. • All that being said... I've climbed El Cap and there is no way in hell I'd go more than 10ft off the ground without a rope. So here's to shootin for the moon. • I believe the film is now being shown in theaters around the country and will soon make its way to Europe and beyond. Goes without saying, you should see it... climber or not, you will be required to evaluate what it means to step out into space and consider taking that extra move that scares you. • 📸—> @erikweihenmayer and I mitigating risk on the North Face of Mt Athabasca in BC. • #climbing #risk #travel #adventure #mountains #elcapitan #rock #rockclimbing #climbingphotography #adventuretime

For all you podders... we are in the mix with the powerful #NoBarriersPodcast. • Yep, another podcast... but this one is unique and will showcase some truly inspiring and bad ass guests. • @erikweihenmayer and I are your hosts bringing in a wide spectrum of friends and colleagues that have inspired us over the years. Injured vets, Paralympic athletes, culture changers and shape shifters. • Find in iTunes or anywhere you get your pods and subscribe to help us continue to introduce and promote the @nobarriersusa message across the globe in a time when we could all use a little ass kickin recipe from folks who’ve been deep in the mire. • #podcast #podcasts #inspiration #inspirational #inspirations #beofservice #motivation #motivationalspeaker #leadership #teamwork #adversity #VUCA
It’s coldest just before the dawn. But boy... when that sun crests over the ridge and basks it thermal wonder down onto them frigid bones... it’s like a rebirth. In most cases, real life is better than a photo filter. • The day that the Fab 5 Sherpa rescue team and I walked by the iconic outline of Ama Dablam. • Stoked to get up on her flanks again next Fall. Some events stick to your memory in such a vivid way you can remember every detail... smells, sounds, commentary. • This young Sherpa had a fairly acute onset of intense, debilitating chest pain up at Camp 2 on Everest. His bros surrounding him were understandable convinced he was having a heart attack and mobilized a rescue. Our Sherpa rescue team found him, packaged him up and waited for @andrew_gutsell to fly his bird up to Camp 2 at 22,000 ft and bring him down to me at Basecamp. • Once Andrew landed at EBC and I could assess the young fellow, it was clear he was in significant distress... fading in and out of consciousness. He would suddenly “wake up” and start thrashing around the cockpit (generally not the thing you want to have happen in a helicopter). The weather was not cooperating for a quick move down the valley so we sat and waited... rotors pounding, meds flowing with patience and the clock ticking. Twenty some minutes later, Andrew lifted us up and followed the sucker holes down to clean air and hospital support in Lukla. • The full presentation, immediate positive response to lower elevations and negative cardiac enzyme tests left us with a probable cardiac spasm event (similar to Printzmetal angina). One of the more memorable cases in a season filled with many. • #climbing #mountains #everest #everestbasecamp #austeremedicine #travelmedicine #medicine #travel #adventure #adventuretime #travelblogger #picoftheday #mountainmedicine #himalaya #himalayas #nepal #sherpa #helicopter #beofservice #physicianassistant @aapaorg
