High gloss warranted today for the world premiere of my flute/violin/bass trio Disintegration Lullabies. Thank you @marinapiccininiflute, @tessalark & @michaelthurber for bringing it over the finish line with such beauty and soulfulness! 💙💜💚
Dearest friends and chamber music lovers, Just wanted to let you know that there are finally(!!) 2 new scores available at wianckoeditions.com--Vox Petra for 2 violas and 2 cellos (commissioned by @melissareardon's wonderful @portlandchambermusicfestival), as well as my 3rd string quartet, Ode on Broken Loom (written earlier this year for the generous @eyblerquartet, who did not just allow me to, but rather INSISTED that I make the piece publicly available after its premiere at @evolutionquartetbanff). You can listen to both pieces in their entirety on that site too. One more thing! I've been writing up a storm these last couple years, which--as any composer will tell you--can be a lonesome and draining endeavor at times. I have to say that the love and encouragement I've received from everyone has been truly overwhelming. It has helped me take bigger risks and do things I didn't think I could do, and there are truly no words that can express my gratitude for that. Just...onwards! ❤️ Love, Paul
Busted out the ol' Luccheses for the US premiere of X Suite tonight. So, SO
and @renanagutman are sounding UNBELIEVABLE!!
Rare Ayane & Paul homeborough performance of American Haiku tonight (Friday, October 11) at 8pm on Brooklyn Chamber Music Society's first concert of the season! Also, did you know Bartok wrote an EPIC piano quintet? You probably did. I guess everyone knew but me. Anyways, come hear me and @yanyanbears play those things and a Haydn Symphony (!) with the amazing Carmit Zori, @daniel___phillips, Rieko Aizawa, and @tarahelenoconnor 🎶💙
Even though we were moved inside for weather-related reasons, Great Wall SLEEP was a truly special one--maybe because the sound was so natural on stage we could lean into the beauty of it...maybe because we were so far from home...or maybe because we spent 3 days with little to do but meditate on music and walls. Whatever the reason, plenty of tears were shed throughout the night. Thanks to @maxrichtermusic for writing a piece that allows me to reset my relationship with music everytime I play it. Thanks to my @acmenewmusic family @benrussell_music, @lauralutzke, @isabelhagen_, and @claricejensen for going all the way and beyond for 8 hours and inspiring me to reach deeper and deeper ❤️
After a near burnout last week, I'm so thankful for a few hours to sit on cliff's edge in Southern Ireland, where exhaustion is giving way to extreme gratitude for this last 12 months, in which I finished my first orchestral work, third string quartet, a quintet, double duo, trio, and solo violin suite; debuted works in Japan, New Zealand, Canada, Mexico, and Ireland; founded a new ensemble, joined another, started on Ayane & Paul's first record, and had my music performed in Carnegie Hall and on a Grammy-nominated album. When I get home I'll start on two more string quartets, a horn solo, cello and piano sonata, and violin concerto; prep for a tour with the Kronos Quartet and a performance of Max Richter's SLEEP on top of the Great Wall of China. Back into the fray with fuel in the tank! ❤️
4th work of 2019: a collection of lullabies to stay awake to for dream trio @marinapiccininiflute, @tessalark, and @michaelthurber; premiering November 3 at @pcmsconcerts
A LOT of love has gone into this show and it is nearly impossible to properly describe, which makes it even more fun that the @nytimes thinks you should come 💙 I don't get to play my own music in NYC very often, let alone an entire set of tunes that bring me as much joy as these--hope to see you there!
Felt a little guilty arranging my cello quartet but once in a while you end up in a room with your favorite people and they don't all play cello. If you are in NYC this Saturday, come hear @starbuckcello @yanyanbears @alexikenney and me play not just my music but the other strange and pleasurable results of our inspiringly exploratory week together. We open @metroensemble's 13th season this Saturday 7/9 at 1 Rivington St!
Difficult to express my gratitude to all of the participant artists of @evolutionquartetbanff who not only poured themselves into the music these past few weeks, but who dove deep to work on communication and generosity of spirit. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing your joys and doubts with each other and with me--we are all stronger for it, and it was reflected in the explosive musical growth I witnessed over the course of the program. I return home with a renewed sense of artistic purpose, a set of deep questions to ponder, and an even deeper sense of hope and pride as I imagine all of you incredible musicians and composers dispersing from this place to share your voices and visions with the world. Such an honor to know you all! @kimiakoochakzadeh @yoavcho #amybrandon #njokongkie #christinavolpini #pallasloredo @hexum_quartet @echeaquartet @zeeheldenquartet @quartet121 @alaudaquartet @bergamotquartet @annajane417 @chloespre @mktviola @cellochocolate @eloise__hodges #rebeccaruthven #leahplave And of course, the faculty of dreams: @clairechaseflute @eyblerquartet @parker_quartet @jackquartet @bozziniquartet @fidigney @suzannefarrincomposer @natachadiels @cris_derksen #suzannahclark #sabrinaschroeder #zoshadicastri
A fantastic hike on our day off at #eqbanff was a great reminder that taking time to breathe and reflect simultaneously strengthens our work and increases our chance of seeing super cute animals.
In our community, we do not say 'I love you.' We offer small acts of kindness. . The incredible composers of the Evolution of the String Quartet (EQ) program at the @banffcentre provide us with astonishing moments of inspiration everyday. This moving performance was presented by Christina Volpini with the help of Kong Kie Njo and Pallas Loredo at our weekly throwdown (anything-goes open mic night). Can't watch this clip without tearing up ❤️ . Follow @evolutionquartetbanff for more magic 😍 #eqbanff #eq2019 #evolutionquartet
My beautiful office for the next 3 weeks! Tonight, however, my heart will be in @wigmore_hall--I can only imagine the spells @alexikenney will cast as he introduces my new solo violin suite to the world ❤️
You never know who's gonna show up-- A surprise honor to get to perform the Mendelssohn Octet for this incredible sweater and its owner, Thomas Leo, the great-great-great-grandson of Fanny Mendelssohn 🤯
