#FromtheArchive > Today we're looking back at an exhibition that featured in the GPP gallery in spring 2015 called In the Shadow of the Pyramids. Work on the project began in 2005 when British-Egyptian photographer @laura_eltantawy started exploring the essence of Egyptian identity in a quest to come to terms with her own. With images spanning 2005 to 2014, what began as a look in the mirror to understand the essence of Egyptian identity expanded into an exploration of the trials and tribulations of a turbulent nation. The final project juxtaposed an innocent past with a chaotic present, looking to the future with hope.
The @Sony @WorldPhotoOrg winners have been announced! Special congratulations to @tasneemalsultan for winning 1st place in the Professional division's Contemporary Issues category with her project Saudi Tales of Love, which we had the pleasure of featuring at the GPP gallery this past February. The project questions the necessity of marriage in relation to personal significance and love, and Tasneem has used the project to follow, document, and explore the stories of Saudi women from a variety of backgrounds and experiences.
#SundaySpotlight > Today we're looking at a project by @joeyldotcom called Guerrilla Fighters of Kurdistan. After the further developing conflicts in Iraq a couple of years ago, Joey decided to travel overseas to document the Kurdish guerrilla groups fighting in the region - fighters he found to be surrounded by many conflicting narratives by press and friends. These groups are known as the Kurdistan Worker's Party (PKK), People's Protection Units (YPG), and Women's Protection Units (YPJ). When describing the project in his own words, Joey said, “I set out to uncover the truth, or at least to better understand the nuances behind the headlines. Portrait photography has a strange way of humanizing even the most distant of situations, and that was my goal with this project.”
