We are opening again this Saturday 06/20/20 for pickup from 1pm to 6pm. This week, for the first time ever, we’ve bottled our house tepache (pictured above), a fermented pineapple drink that we brew with sliced ginger, cane sugar, and cinnamon sticks. We’re also debuting a blood orange version of our flagship DIPA 15 Miles East thy we’ve dubbed Raining Blood Orange. We still have a handful of cases of Republic left and sales from it will still go to @blklivesmatter. At this point we’ve raised over $1500 from sales during the past 2 Saturdays! Y’all are amazing. Progress and equality won’t come easy or without direct action. Let’s keep it up! #suspendedbrewing #madeinbaltimore
This beer was named after Plato’s Republic, a philosophical text that questions what a just society would look like. We’re donating 100% of the sales from this beer to @blklivesmatter.
The founding fathers are often credited as the first brewers in America. It was in fact slaves like Peter Hemings, owned by Thomas Jefferson, who brewed the beer they enjoyed. These stories, especially in our industry, are rarely told. Our industry, like many others in America, lacks racial equality in all aspects from consumption, taproom and production staff, all the way up to ownership. Beer has for a long time been the most selling alcoholic beverage in the world (consistently over half of all alcohol sales year after year) and those sales have largely profited white men who have long had the access to capital, means of production, relationships with other white men in the supply chain, and education among other aspects. The work we do in our own workplaces and industries gravely impacts the world in which we live and die in. One of the values we hold in highest regard at Suspended is our commitment to inclusivity with an understanding that we’re in an industry that has a long way to go and a debt it can never properly repay. In fact Suspended was always meant to be a manifestation of moral ideals with the beer merely being a vehicle to spread those ideals. We know that anything we could do could never be enough to balance the crooked scales of justice but we nonetheless rebel in every way we can. Black lives in this country are inhumanely and disproportionately affected (by a very high margin) in any measure of society including health and wellness, education, housing, poverty, income inequality, workplace equity, violence, and incarceration. We stand as allies with the victims and their families, the protestors, the activists, the journalists, and all those working to dismantle and rebuild our society into a fair, and equitable one. This weekend 25% of all sales will be donated to @campaignzero and we’re releasing Leda, our first mixed culture solera project, alongside a new IPA, Unbalanced Scales. Next weekend we are re-releasing Republic in bottles and, as a beer named after a philosophical text that questions what a just society should look like, we are donating 100% of those sales to @blklivesmatter.
