Did you know you can eat aloe gel?! ☀️ When added to a smoothie, you don't really taste it at all, and it may offer anti-inflammatory, digestive health, and blood sugar balancing benefits. ☀️ Aloe vera has a long history of popular and traditional use. ☀️ It is used in traditional Indian medicine for constipation, colic, skin diseases, worm infestation, and infections (Heber 2007). ☀️ It is also used in Trinidad and Tobago for hypertension (Lans 2006). ☀️ Mexicans use it for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM; Coronado et al. 2004). Some evidence in humans and animals suggests that Aloe vera is able to alleviate the chronic hyperglycemia and perturbed lipid profile that are characteristic of DM, which are major risk factors for cardiovascular complications in the disease. ☀️ In Chinese medicine, it is often recommended in the treatment of fungal diseases (Heber 2007). ☀️ While most of it's usage is based on tradition and anecdotal evidence, there is a growing number of studies on the beneficial effects of aloe. ☀️ Now I’m not talking about aloe gel from the drugstore, but rather the clear gel directly from the aloe leaf (you can buy a plant like this one at a farmers market, or many health food stores, Latin, and Asian supermarkets carry whole leaves for about $2-4). ☀️ I sometimes add a 1-inch chunk to my smoothies ( just the clear gel- I remove the outer green leaf and avoid any yellow latex directly under leaf skin- there are YouTube videos on how to properly cut aloe!) ☀️ Have you ever had aloe gel?! If so, what are your favorite ways to make it? ☀️📸 @shikha.nyc www.mariamarlowe.com/blog
