A lesson in history. . The Aga Khan Palace was initially built by Aga Khan III to support the people of Pune who were affected by famine; by creating jobs for them. . Years later, during The Quit India Movement, Mahatma Gandhi, his wife and secretary were interned at the palace (1942 - 1944) by the British. . Although in a dilapidated state, the palace holds significance for many Indians and those associated with India's freedom struggle.
This is what remains of the Shaniwar Wada, the seat of Peshwa power in the 18th century. . If you don't know who the Peshwas are, then think of the film Bajirao Mastani in popular culture and that should put things into perspective. There is even a gate called Mastani Darwaza in this fort/palace.
Long weekend in Abu Dhabi means a chance to escape to Pune, India.
