Charley was elected secretary of her school 4-H Club today and she won the blue ribbon in the poster contest. Gotta love 4-H. #4h
Georgia made a birthday banner for @eleanort2
This is me with my Jersey heifer Bonnie winning a 4-H show when I was about 11. 4-H was a big part of my life as a kid. I participated in showing and judging cattle, showing and judging horses, public speaking and more. I was the state equine judging champion when I was 12, and I went to 4-H camp every summer from ages 9-13. Now 11 year old Charlotte is getting involved with 4-H. She’s going to do the equine care and judging program, which you’re able to do even if you don’t have a horse of your own, and she’s going to do the poultry showing and judging program since she does have her own chickens. I’ve signed up to be the parent sponsor for 4-H at her school. What comes around goes around. I hope she has as much fun with 4-H as I did (and how about those glasses I’m sportin’ in that photo, huh?) #4h
I can’t believe that it was 20 years ago today that I watched you being born into a giant tub of water (with your 9 month old El twin asleep in the corner of the room on a folded blanket). I remember your mother’s strength and power so vividly and the way you floated up from the water with beautiful eyes only for your mama. Being there that day was among the most amazing, life-changing events I’ve ever experienced, and being your auntie for the last 20 years has been one of the greatest joys of my life. You’ve grown into a young woman who exceeds every expectation our family ever could have had for you. You’re kind, loving, compassionate, hard working, self reliant, powerful, giving and magical. I love you more than words can express. HAPPY BIRTHDAY @eleanort2 !!

The nice new chicken coop won’t be delivered until Saturday so for the time being, our backyard flock of hens is being housed in dog crates under the picnic pavilion. Ever since we lost our previous chicken flock to hawks (and a crummy coop) two years ago, Leo has seemed a bit at loose ends, except for keeping an eye on the little girls when they play outdoors. But once I started bringing home our new backyard flock of 7 hens earlier this week, it’s like he has a new lease on life. Pretty much all Leo wants to do now is lie near where we’re keeping the chickens to make sure they’re safe. A little while ago he ran off a large flock of giant wild turkeys that he apparently felt had gotten too close to his new chickens. It makes me happy to see him so happy. He likes having a job to do. #lgd #greatpyrenees #greatpyreneesofi stagram #backyardchickens #backyardchickensofinstagram
Oh my gosh! I love this photo so much! It captures the exact moment last night when Georgia found out that she won her age group in the #4thandGill Neighborhood Halloween costume contest :-) #halloween2018
Today when I went to the poultry breeder in Dandridge to pick up my Wyandotte hen, I made friends with this absolutely crazypants looking Polish frizzle Rooster. He looked like a muppet and was the friendliest rooster I’ve ever met. #backyardchickensofinstagram
Today I’m topping off the final 2 hens for my backyard flock of 7. My new coop is set to arrive Saturday so we’ll be good to go. This is a photo of the breed of hen we’re picking up from a breeder in Dandridge today. She’s a somewhat rare heritage breed called a Blue Red Laced #Wyandotte. She’ll lay medium to large cream colored eggs. Isn’t she pretty? #backyardchickens #backyardchickensofinstagram
One more reason I’m supporting Indya Kincannon for Mayor of Knoxville: a great sense of humor.. Here she is strolling the neighborhood tonight with her husband, Prof. Ben Barton at UT’s College or Law, and the sign on Indya’s badass costume reads, “It worked for Mayor Jacobs.” (For those who don’t know, our newly elected Knox County Mayor was a legitimately famous professional wrestler before making his successful foray into local politics) #knoxville #knoxrocks #knoxcounty #37917halloween2018
Georgia won the neighborhood costume contest for her age group! I don’t think I’ve ever seen her so excited! She won a gift certificate for Union Avenue Books. #37917Halloween2018

Meet OlIve. She’s a blue Ameraucana and she should start laying any time now. Her eggs will be a beautiful avocado color.
Have I mentioned how proud I am of my two eldest munchkins? At only age 23, Jane is already two years out of college and she’s kicking ass and taking names with a great company in one of the coolest cities in the country. And my college junior is acing his classes and just started a new job. As for Leo, well, I’m proud of him for just being a fine specimen of canid. #proudmama
We don’t have our super duper new coop delivered yet - we’re using dog crates and rocks and packing tape and heavy landscaping until it arrives In a day or two. But we do now have 4 of my eventual new flock of 7 hens. They’re pullets now, which means they’re older than babies but haven’t started laying yet. Basically they’re at the ugliest stage of hen-hood but they will be beautiful after they mature. I got two Easter Eggers - they lay various shades of greens and blue, medium-large eggs. And I got one black Polish Frizzle which will have a ridiculously cute mop on top of her head, and she’ll lay small white eggs. And I got one White Lace Wyandotte which will be large and gorgeous and which will lay large medium cream eggs. I’ll also be adding one Wellsummer and one Marans, both of which will lay dark brown eggs. Then the flock will be full. #backyardchickens

Today was pajamas and hats day at school. Georgia picked out the rattiest old nightgown she owns to wear, with a garish, clashing tie dye t-shirt to go under it. She then topped it off with a stained, glittery pink cap. I didn’t say anything.
Have you lost a loved one to drugs? Do you live in the Knoxville area? Then please join us tonight (Thursday, October 4) for our monthly GRASP (Grief Recovery After Substance Passing) fellowship. GRASP is a free and anonymous support group for anyone who has lost someone they cared about to substance abuse. We will meet at 7pm tonight at St. James Episcopal Church at 1101 North Broadway in Knoxville. There’s plenty of free parking at the church. Please come spend some time with others who understand your pain in a way that only those who have experienced the same pain possibly can. We hope to see you this evening. - Katie, Knoxville GRASP chapter leader

Georgia and Charlotte told me they had made something for me to help me in grad school. It turns out that it’s this “Do Not Disturb” sign to put on my bedroom door when I’m in class or studying.
Henry would have been 27 this week. His friends - the ones who didn’t also die of overdoses in the years after Henry died - are growing up and moving on. They’re in grad school, working at their fledgling careers, and in a few cases, even getting married and having beautiful babies. I love hearing from his friends or their mothers, or just keeping up with these kids on Instagram. And I wonder all the time what Henry would be doing if he were still here. I know that his friends think about it too. #addiction #overdose #grief #loss #bereavement #childloss

My grandfather’s passion was searching for Noah’s Ark on Mt. Ararat. He traveled to Turkey multiple times to look for it. Here he is, working in Turkey. Before he died, he found something he found to be of strong interest in one of his photos from a crevasse high on Ararat. But because of his age, he never got the chance to climb the mountain again. I’m not saying that I agreed with him but I always admired his work up on the mountain. #noahsark #ararat #Turkey #MountArarat #mtararat

Henry’s new brick in downtown Knoxville, unveiled tonight as part of the National Day of Remembrance. It’s outside the City-County Building and I hope that the assistant DA who called my son an “unattractive victim” and who told me to “shut up” has to walk by it every day.
On this eve of the National Day of Remembrance for victims of crime, which happens to fall on my birthday, please give a thought for my precious baby, taken from us when he was still just a teenager. The 3 men who assaulted him were never arrested, while the drug dealers who gave him the drugs and then watched him suffer fatal brain damage on their floor for 17 hours served only brief sentences for drug dealing. They are back on the streets of Knoxville today, undoubtedly selling to other teens. I loved him so.
And here’s Elliot hanging out with some mountain goats (white creatures to the left) #colorado #breckenridge #mountaingoats

I have a pair of Ugg boots that Jon got me for Christmas last year that I just love. Unfortunately, one of them got a big water stain on the entirety of one toe of the boot. I want to clean the water stain off the Ugg but there seem to be tons of different products that claim to do this and I’m not sure which one(s) actually work. Many of them seem to be more about waterproofing the Uggs (which I will do after I get this stain out) as opposed to cleaning a water stain that’s already on the boot. Can any of y’all recommend a good, specific product for getting a large water stain off of Ugg boots? #uggs #uggboots
My boy and me. We get to have a late lunch date today so I’m psyched.

Rebecca, Jane & a pal at last weekend’s Titans game. I have no idea where Jane & Elliot got their love of going to football games. Definitely not from me (I went to one UT football game ever. I was wearing a sandwich board reading, “U.S. out of Nicaragua!”) #tennesseetitans #govols
I belong to a Facebook group with thousands of parents who have lost their drug addicted children to overdose. So many of us feel so misled by the concept that an addict has to hit “rock bottom” to find recovery. For many, if not most opiate addicts, “rock bottom” means death. The tough love approach that I was sold by so-called experts was a lie. I would much rather have had Henry using drugs with clean needles in our clean, loving home while we gently, compassionately and firmly urged him toward recovery than have had him feeling abandoned, hungry, unwashed, and alone on the streets, using with strangers wherever he could find a couch or floor to sleep that night, feeling that unless he got clean that we had turned our backs on him forever, and that he didn’t deserve anyone’s love. I no longer believe in the traditional “let them hit rock bottom” approach. I believe that it’s only through compassion, empathy, firm insistence on treatment and plenty of LOVE (minus the tough) that addicts are most likely to find their way through. And if they don’t. If they die, it will be surrounded by that love and not instead wallowing in shame, abandonment and distance from those to whom they’re closest. Substance use disorder is a DISEASE. It’s a chronic, relapsing brain and body disease no different from diabetes or schizophrenia. And it’s the only disease where we are still telling the loved ones of the sick individual to kick him or her out onto the streets until he or she hits some kind of unknown and terrifying bottom. I reject tough love. I embrace love. I’m so sorry I failed you my sweet Henry. I listened to the highly (HIGHLY) paid experts and they lied to me. #addiction #overdose #recovery #grief #childloss #berevedparents #opioidcrisis

You’ve got to check out the new book by my friend @herbadmother I’m reading it now and it’s incredibly insightful and inspiring. It turns the old tropes about traits traditionally identified (primarily negatively) with women in the world of work and demonstrates how each one is actually an asset to both the woman herself and to potential employers. This is a book that needs to be read and studied in business courses across the U.S. I’m giving it to my 23 year old daughter for Christmas.

Going thru wedding photos while celebrating our anniversary this week I ran across this photo - one of my favorites of my baby girl and me. I love this child like crazy and sure do miss her. But I’m also super, super proud of the amazing life she’s creating for herself. @janegranju
Tomorrow Jon & I will have been married 12 years. I’ve never met a finer man than Jonathan Hickman, and the fact that he chose me to be his wife continues to amaze me. I don’t know how I got so lucky. Jon had no idea when we married that only 4 years later I would lose my oldest child and he would lose his oldest stepchild. He had no idea that the person he married would be irrevocably changed by this horrible experience, both growing and shrinking in the aftermath of the worst blow that a human being can endure. But Jon’s never taken a step away from all the hard stuff that’s happened since Henry died. Instead he’s leaned in closer, holding me up when I otherwise would have fallen, acting as both parents when I’ve been unable to do my share as one, and loving the “after” me - as different as I am - just as much as he loved the “before” me whom he married. I love this guy, and so does our whole family. I feel lucky every day to walk this path next to him. (And for those of you who were at our wedding, wasn’t it a fun one??!!) #anniversary #wedding #weddings #outdoorwedding #bellbuckle #family #friends #fun
