“In many shamanic societies, if you came to a medicine person complaining of being disheartened, dispirited, or depressed, they would ask one of four questions: “When did you stop dancing? When did you stop singing? When did you stop being enchanted by stories? When did you stop being comforted by the sweet territory of silence?” Gabrielle Roth . . . ✨🌏
I don’t work out to lose weight or negate what I eat. I make conscious effort to move my body in a purposeful way to honor the spirit that propels me into the world and to support the 206 bones and 12 organs that make up the house that I live in. In light of mental health awareness month, I encourage you to get clear on what movements bring you joy and then to quite simply, do more of them! ✨Movement is one of the best forms of self love, it is nourishment beyond the plate. . . . Psychology is not just the study of weakness and damage, it is also the study of strength and virtue. Treatment is not just fixing what is broken, it is nurturing what is best within ourselves. Growing up I loved fig newtons, but these days I am elated to savor fresh figs or black mission figs. 🌱 Figs are high in polyphenols which help combat oxidative stress. Dried figs are higher in carbohydrates but studies have shown they contain more of these powerful antioxidants. 🌱 Figs are also good sources of potassium and fiber which most Westerners don’t get enough of. 👉🏼 Since figs are a higher carbohydrate food make sure to pair them with protein and fat to help regulate blood glucose levels. A few dried figs can add up quickly to be more than 100 grams of carbohydrates which depending on your unique metabolic health and lifestyle, can impede your health goals. I like to roll dried figs in almond butter and coconut flakes, then freeze them 🙂🔥 . . . #figlife #delish #wholefoods #naturescandy #antioxidants #nourish #polyphenols #brainfuel
I think a lot about creating and maintaining healthy habits. Life is constantly shifting and our routines can easily fall apart. I’m a firm believer that strict routines don’t work long term. Instead, I suggest establishing a framework helps you navigate life’s unexpected challenges. No matter what city or environment I’m in I always come back to my top 3 basics: 1) nourishing food, 2) movement and 3) intentional living. 🥗My food intake changes daily but I’m always conscious to eat colorful plants, avocados and quality animal protein. 🏃♀️Movement is necessary for me to feel clear headed, resilient and efficient but I don’t depend on a gym or a class. You can find me doing push-ups and squats at a local park which always feels more restorative than being trapped indoors. 📝Every morning when I wake up I think about my daily intention. Setting a daily intention has nothing to do with my to do list or what projects I aim to complete. Setting a daily intention is all about asking myself HOW I plan to show up in the world. Will I practice patience or will I hone my listening skills with each human interaction? Intentional living grounds me and helps forms the compass for how I show up for myself and others. 🙏🏼 Nourishing food, movement and intentional living is my framework to live my best life. What’s included in your framework? . . . Habits are more powerful than fears Seth Godin
When I was little I told my parents I wanted to be a “Daddy” when I grew up. I watched the way my Dad showed up in the world and admired the fire he brought into nearly every endeavor. 34 years later and not much has changed. Also, we always find a way to match. ☺️🏀 . . . The ways in which people are damaged are the ways in which they're strong. It's what makes people interesting - what they've overcome and how, and what they haven't and how that's become a good thing. Almost everyone's life is both a gorgeous story and a tragedy. I think being alive is really, really hard and I'm constantly stunned and amazed by people who make it beautiful and interesting. 💫 - Sarah Polley
