If you’ve been following my stories, you know my friend Kathryn and I took a spontaneous trip to London this past week (which was fabulous). . After spending the last 8 months in countries without English as the national language, it was SO WEIRD to be in a country where it was. I felt like I had superpowers. . . It’s also super fascinating to me as a language teacher. I found myself formulating French questions when thinking about asking for help, or even automatically trying to translate my thoughts when I was in public places. . . Did you know that all languages are part of the same language system in the brain? You don’t have a Spanish area, English area, etc. they’re all jumbled into the same compartments. So really, switching between them is really about having developed an effective labeling system (“ENGLISH”, “SPANISH”, “FRIENDS”, “BOSS”) so you can quickly select the correct files in your brain when you need them. . . It’s been fascinating to watch my own brain struggling to adjust the filing system to accommodate a new language. I imagine little workers running around, barking orders and color-coding. Being in an English-speaking country seemed to be make quite a bit of chaos in the typical goings-on up there... . . Have you ever notice the struggle to switch languages or dialects, particularly in new contexts? Doesn’t it feel like trying to find the right file? 😂 #teachertraveltuesday
A huge thank you to @starrspangledplanner for her story today and for this post I’m reposting. If you haven’t seen it yet, go check her story out. It does such a good job of answering the question, “Where do I begin?” in explaining systemic racism. Channeling my discomfort, my anger, my frustration, and my sadness into these actionable steps. Discomfort is productive. I’m pledging to lean into it, to read, to listen, and then leverage my own privilege to work towards dismantling systemic racism. I pledge to accept feedback with a humble heart, knowing that growth is work above the ego and for the cause. Thank you to all educators on Insta that use their platform to share ways to continue the fight. ・・ . . . . . .#whiteprivilegeisreal #knowbetterdobetter #blacklivesmatter #teachersbelieveblacklivesmatter #socialjustice #blacklivesmatter #nojusticenopeace #sjw #racism #antiracism #oppression #prejudice #implicitbias #socialjusticeeducation #multiculturaleducation #civilrights #humanrights #equity #inequality #inequity #equality #teachersofig #teachersfollowteachers
