Yes, I speak their language... I have a good ear. Don't let Hollywood and urban snobs fool you- the redneck life isn't easy but it's a damn good time! Simple life my ass!
First summer swim
Between it raining 75% of the time, and getting freelance work down in the devils den more than normal, the coop has taken way longer than I hoped or anticipated, but no chickens were lost, and bills are paid so ales gut! 👍 Still plenty of work to do for the coop to be complete, but at least it's predator and waterproofed, and the chickens are doing much better than they were in the brooder a day ago. Still have to figure out what I'll do for the ducks because of what a mess they make but there's a good chance they're gonna end up in the coop with the chickens despite both species preferring a segregated life even amongst the different chicken breeds, but with the right amenities like entertainment, high calorie diet, illusion of freedom- this farmer is determined to convince his livestock that it's best for all.
So, this brooder was a quick temporary solution to fast growing chickens who didn't yet have an actual coop to move into. It was great until the Cornish cross meat birds grew to be 4x the size as the Rhode Island Reds along with three ducks that were given to us which are terribly filthy foul fowl albeit cute. Fortunately Cosmo doesn't want to kill any of them but I am a little concerned by the fact he's a lil intimated by harmless birds every carnivorous animal in the Catskills wants to eat. Hopefully they become buddies and he protects them without having to get in any confrontations himself 🤷♂️🙏 I'm thinking it isn't a coincidence I started seeing snakes in there barn on a daily basis since putting them in there 😬 Fortunately, the chicken coop has been closed and sealed, and the chickens we're transferred there yesterday without any casualties. Might have to get new chickies so this thing isn't just wasting space.
Our first family snow shoeing outing (in the backyard) for the first #tbt... After dealing with dirty black snow our whole lives, mountain snow is pretty awesome! And Cosmo must be part polar bear cuz he loves that shit more than anything... Accept squirrels, of course.
The amount of bullfrogs we had serenading us last year was pretty intense... It looks like the Kermit choir is expanding at a massive rate to the point of a demographic problem... We might need to stock the pond with some fish that eat this DNA looking egg strands! Any ideas? Cosmo tried to take a bite out of a frog and wasn't a big fan 😂
Chicken coop is coming along slowly but surely... It'll be a bit overkill for the 26 chicks we have but do plan on expanding the flock very soon. Plus, I want my chicks comfortable and feeling safe so them eggs are healthy and plentiful. Woahhhh women being called chicks has a whole new relevance! Mind blownnnnn 🐣🐥🔪🐓🥚
When I look behind the house, I don't only see a beautiful landscape... I see fruit orchards, edible forests, berry patches, greenhouses, animals grazing, and even a few tiny homes family and friends can stay in to escape the city to recharge (or escape the apocalypse 😜). I see unlimited untapped potential that can result in enough abundance to feed an entire community. I see multi-generational wealth that requires nothing but a vision and willpower to bring it to life! It's like God made Man stewards of the Earth capable of turning any landscape into unbelievable abundance... Why let that inherent ability go to waste? For fancy pants in a shoebox with Netflix??? GTFO of here with that bs! Surely you rather be the Shepard than the sheep, wouldn't you?
Decided to switch back to the first bed I dug (right) to avoid moving dirt again... Seedlings are getting big so had to get at least one done asap. Trying to different style beds- left conventional, right hugelkultur. #growyourfood #raisedgardenbeds #hugelkultur #brickstosticks #homesteadlife
