These are the two very rough #Moog #Minimoog Model Ds that came in in the past couple of days, both of which have never been serviced before, which is the case more often than you might think! Both will be fully overhauled inside and out. The funny phenomenon where all of the keys of the same note letter are more yellow than the rest on one of them is something we've seen several times before. We imagine the person tasked with assembling keyboards in the Moog factory pulling them out of 8 different boxes, one full of each letter of white key and one full of black keys... each white key box potentially from different production batches at the factory where they came from... and one of them is a batch where they used a different plastic mix, that decades later, aged differently. Higher levels of bromide, added as a fire retardant, lead to more yellowing in a *deoxidation* chemical reaction when exposed to ultraviolet rays. We will reverse this yellowing by forcing an *oxidation* reaction by putting the keys in a hydrogen peroxide solution under an ultraviolet light. My understanding of this reaction is that the H2O2 (hydrogen peroxide) easily breaks down into H2O (water) and oxide ions O2- which will combine with the bromide into... something less yellow (chemistry people correct me if I'm wrong!) Yet another OB-8 undergoes a full restoration, or more like, rehabilitation. It arrived with both voice boards covered with both gooey road case foam AND mouse pee. Darian removed every single affected component. Many of them had to be thrown away, but some were individually cleaned in preparation for being put back in. We got the boards very clean (starting with water and detergent in the sink... Most components can withstand getting wet if dried quickly!) and now Darian is repopulating them. This is the first time we've had all of the Oberheim OBs in the shop at the same time and servicing all of them one after another has allowed us to really familiarize ourselves with the more subtle differences between them (in addition to the more obvious ones!). Yesterday, for example, we realized that the OB-8 is the only one in the family that digitally encodes its bender voltage, whereas the others all apply it directly as an analog CV-- and how that affects the way the pitch bend behaves. . . The smallest OB, the OB-SX is now for sale here as well! It is a 4-voice, 56-program model and offers the legendary OB sound in a compact, lower-cost package. This unit has been given our "standard OB full service" including fully rebuilding the power supply, replacing all the voice card trimmers, switching ICs and specific known-to-be-sketchy capacitors, full calibration and Pratt Read keyboard rebuild.
