Kinley and I were feeling completely inspired by @thestrongcollection's new @get.creative.with Inspiring Artist challenge and got our @smockson for a little Mondrian shape art mash-up 😁👊🏼 • Before we got started, Kinley and I did a quick google for a super brief rundown of all things Piet and I was shocked that she completely ate it up 😍 She wanted to see more and more of his gorgeously minimalistic masterpieces and continued to ask me random questions about him (including Did Piet have to ride in a shopping cart when he was a kiddo? 😜) all day long. (I can't wait to keep this artist exploration going!! 🙌🏼💕👩🏻🎨...Thanks J!!) • So, once we had a good feel for Mondrian, we sat down side-by-side at the schoolroom table with Sharpies and rulers and a palette full of primary colored paint and got started. We used our rulers and Sharpies to make lines (K got tired of fussing with the ruler and made her own squares and lines after a bit) and then we filled our white squares and rectangles in with paint. • Kinley has been getting increasingly irritated when things don't turn out quite right, and today when a couple of my lines were a little crooked I made sure to point them out to her and then to show her how I could think of a different way to fix them. We didn't have one single it's just not perfect tear today, so maybe it helped? Or maybe she's just in love with minimalism? 😁💕 • Slide for a better look at our art and a peek at Piet Mondrian's Composition A, Kinley's most favorite of his masterpieces. • Shape Art meets Inspiring Artists! If you wanna join in the Shape Art fun, you've still got a couple of days. Our girl Sian @teach.investigate.play doesn't choose her favorites until Sunday, so get those #smockson friends 😘👊🏼💕 Happy Friday!! • • • • • #mondrian #modrianinspired #smockson #preschoolart #minimalism #arthistory #childart #artkid #invitationtocreate #creativityfound #365homeschool #kidscrafts101 #ece #toddlerart #processart #creativetable #creativemamas #littleartists #futureartist #creativelife #earlylearning #artmom #kidsart #earlylearning #artmatters
The Case of the Stinky Stench by Josh Funk, illustrated by Brendan Kearney • @sterlingkids @joshfunkbooks @brendandraws • • I was just looking back through all of the books that I've posted and I can't believe I never shared the first in this super fun series, Lady Pancake & Sir French Toast! It's one of our all-time faves (totally gotta check that one out if you haven't already!) and it's sequel does NOT disappoint 😍 • In the first one, Lady Pancake and Sir French Toast are racing each other on a crazy trek through a crazy cute fridge full of smiley food to be the one to claim the last drop of maple syrup, but when this new one begins, the pair is on vacation at Marshmallow Coast. Sir French Toast's nephew, Inspector Croissant, interrupts their lounge sesh to ask for help solving a super tough and incredibly smelly mystery. Sir and Lady end their vacay early and lend a hand to save the coolest fridge ever from certain stinky disaster! • I'm such a sucker for books written in verse, and Mr. Funk is the reigning king of absolutely perfect rhyming stories. He's a MASTER! And come on, have you ever seen a cuter corn on the cob?! Just wait til you get a load of Brenden Kearney's tator tots 😍😍 Kinley literally kisses them every single time we read it because they are so impossibly cute! They are a match made in picture book heaven, these two -- all of our fingers and toes are crossed for a number three! We read this gem over and over and over until the library called and told us our turn was over a week ago and they needed it back 😏😜 For real. (The same thing happened when we discovered the first one! 😂) • I made the mistake of reading the first one in my most over-the-top British accent one night, and now Kinley will not relax and listen until I wead it the wight way! 😂💕 Looks like this one is headed for our Amazon list since the library wasn't down with my plan to renew it for the next year or four 😉 Have you read this one yet? What did your kiddos think? • • • • • #thecaseofthestinkystench #ihomeschool #iheartbooks #picturebook #picturebooks #childrensliterature #kidsbookstagram #yeskidsbookstagram #readaloudrevival #kidlitpicks #kidlit #childrensbooks
Today was one of those perfectly perfect super rare sunshiny days and we enjoyed every minute of it! 😍When Kinley and I did our usual Top Three Things That Happened Today countdown at bedtime, it was almost impossible to narrow it down to just three but here's what we ended up with: • Kinley climbed her first tree and learned to puppy paddle AND swim with her face in the water in our little backyard pool 🙌🏼😎 • We teamworked on the prettiest chalk masterpiece that has ever graced our sidewalk with K's brand-new super vibrant @crayola chalk (slide for a peek at that #smockson shapetastic rainbowy gorgeousness 😍🌈) • Side-by-side banana popsicles on the front porch 😁👍🏼🍌 Here's hoping tomorrow is banana popsicle perfect, too! 🤞🏼For ALL of us 😘😘 Happy Thursday, instabuddies! • • • • • #raisingkinley #preschoollife #summertime #treeclimber #bananapopsicle #sidewalkchalk #sidewalkchalkart #happygirl #mommyandme #stayathomemom #momlife #goodday #climbatree #sunshine #sahm #mygirl #happy
Simplest. Shape art. EVER. •• Kinley and I busted out the old tangram set yesterday and instead of just using them for regular old traditionally awesome tangram-y activities, we busted out the chalk pastels and a jar of water too and got our shape trace on! •• This @smocks.on Shapes Art week is leading to so many awesome discussions at our house! While we were working on our easy peasy masterpieces, I managed to work in some triangle, square and even PARALLELOGRAM talk (🤓🎉) and we even chatted about all things rectangle while we played outside! (Check the next post for that teamwork shape beauty pic 😍) Any expanding on the art going on this week at your house? •• It's not too late to get your learn + art on! The totally fabulous Sian isn't choosing her faves until Sunday 💕 If you do decide you wanna get in on the shape art challenge action with us, just: 1️⃣ Make some art WITH your kiddos and post a pic of your teamwork art, the artwork you created side-by-side, or a pic of you and your little in the process of creating together. 2️⃣ Tag it #smockson AND @smocks.on & @teach.investigate.play 3️⃣ Follow @teach.investigate.play @cara.raisingkinley, @toddler_tornado, @momma_teaching and @smocks.on! 😁 • • • • • #shapeart #chalkpastels #craftymomma #rockinartmoms #creativelife #earlylearning101 #artmom #momblogger #kidscrafts101 #preschoolathome #preschoollife #preschooliscool #iteach #artchallenge #painttogether #togethertime #together #createtogether #sahmlife #artforeveryone #tinyartist #bigfun #creativelife #matisse #messy #processart #dontforgetdads #familytime #createtogether
I can't be the only one who thinks of Matisse when they hear Shape Art right? We created with these homemade stamps awhile ago and this was the perfect week to bust them out again for some more stamptastic fun! ••• To prep, I cut a classic wavy Matisse shape out of sticky-backed craft foam and stuck it to another layer of craft foam to make the actual pretty stamp part. (If you wanna try this and don't have sticky craft foam, you could double-sided tape the layers together! 🙌🏼) Then I stuck the newly created pretty part to a scrap of foam board and glued a card stock loop handle to the back side. Easy peasy! I made an abstract squares one the exact same way. You could make these simple stamps for any shape really -- they each take no more than 5 minutes and after two rough and crazy stamping sessions, they are still in great shape. ••• Kinley chose her usual princess color palette for this round of shape stamping and took some serious pleasure in squirting big giant blobs of paint on our makeshift giant stamp pad (plastic Dollar Tree craft mat). We just squished and stamped and we rocked out to the Sing soundtrack (it's really good if you haven't listened 😉👍🏼👍🏼) til we ran out of paper 😍 ••• K turned the whole thing into a hand-painting sesh as usual after using her little fingers to carefully apply paint. Always with the Smurf manicures 😂😂 ••• Sian and I were just chatting about how crazy cool the shape art projects that are popping up over @smocks.on already are! I can't wait to see what else you guys come up with that I can add to my must-try list 👊🏼💕 Don't forget, if you wanna get it on the shape art action, just: 1️⃣ Make some art WITH your kiddos and post a pic of your teamwork art, the artwork you created side-by-side, or a pic of you and your little in the process of creating together. 2️⃣ Tag it #smockson AND @smocks.on & @teach.investigate.play 3️⃣ Follow @teach.investigate.play @cara.raisingkinley, @toddler_tornado, @momma_teaching and @smocks.on! 😁 • • • • • #kidbloggersofinstagram #craftymomma #rockinartmoms #creativelife #earlylearning101 #artmom #matisse #kidscrafts101 #processart #diystamp
🔵 A Pattern for Pepper by Julie Kraulis 🔵@tundrabooks @juliekraulisbooks #prhpartner #tundra50 ••• Pepper has a very important event on her calendar, so her momma takes her to the family tailor to have a special dress made. Before Mr. Taylor gets to work on her custom get-up, he walks her through all of the patterns and fabrics she can choose from complete with a teeny-tiny history lesson about each one. Which will be HER signature pattern? I'm partial to her gramma's dotted swiss and Kinley is dying for a herringbone dress, but Pepper chooses something different, equally stunning and absolutely perfect for her special event! ••• We loved this book! I don't think I've ever seen a picture book dedicated to fabric and patterns and it's just lovely. Even I learned a few things -- did you know the word seersucker comes from a Persian phrase meaning milk and sugar because it's both bumpy and smooth? Me neither. So cool! Also the element of surprise -- you don't know which pattern Pepper picked until after her and Mr. Taylor get done with it at the very end -- kept Kinley and I both guessing and captivated. ••• A perfectly lovely and super sweet book! 👍🏼💕👍🏼 • • • • • • #patternbook #ihomeschool #iheartbooks #picturebook #picturebooks #childrensliterature #kidsbookstagram #yeskidsbookstagram #readaloudrevival #kidlitpicks #kidlit #childrensbooks #kidslit #raisingreaders #readaloud #checkitout #bookstagrammer #preschool #repeatread #365homeschool #raisingkinley #book #bookworm #booklover #littlebookworm #kidsbookswelove #booklove
BEEP BEEP BOOP (Happy Monday in robospeak 😉🤖💕) I was looking around our schoolroom today and noticed our robot pals hanging on the wall...😮 ✨💡✨ SHAPES AND WASHI TAPE!! ✨💡✨ I've been wanting to share these guys and this just seems like fate -- you know cause it's @smocks.on Shapes Art week and @get.creative.with Washi Tape week?! 🎉🎉 •.•.• When we made these a few weeks ago I just gave K some gray @lakeshorelearning construction paper (that stuff never looses its color--we've had the same pack since K was 18 months old!) and we had a short shapes refresher discussion while checking out some flashcard examples, then got out our safety scissors and got down to roboshape cutting 💕🤖 •.•.• We used a whole bunch of fun stuff to decorate (felt scraps, rainbow heart washi tape, cardstock scraps, aluminum foil, sparkly pom-poms, googly eyes, and pipe cleaners) Snowball and Rob and we glued them to a cotton-round/paint/hammer smash messy art background that was already stashed in our closet artalanche. Aren't they cuties?! 😍 •.•.• @artcampla chooses her washi tape faves Wednesday and you have until Sunday to get your shape on for @teach.investigate.play, so what are you waiting for? I haven't shared a book in awhile and I need to get on it! We've got a whole stack of Kinley & Momma approved story treasure ready and waiting, so let's do this! First up: ⭐️ WODNEY WAT'S WOBOT by Helen Lester • illustrated by Lynn Munsinger @hmhbooks ⭐️ •🐭💕🤖• Wodney Wat has a hawd time pwonouncing his awww's, but luckily, for his birthday he receives a talking robot, and that little guy doesn't have any twouble at all! • School is going great for Wodney now that he has his special bot friend to help him communicate, until one day Camilla Capybara, the class bully, returns. She's bossy, insulting and seriously rude. (She also says hilarious things that make K giggle-snort nightly 😜) Basically, she makes all of the other rodents really, really miserable. • How will they ever get rid of her? Will Wodney and his magnificent wobot be able to save the day somehow? •🐭💕🤖• I'm not gonna give it away, but I will tell you that out of the fifty picture books we have checked out from the library right now, this is the only one Kinley wants to read. She is OBSESSED with sweet Wodney. She kisses him on every page. She recites the entire story WITH voices along with me. (Slide to hear her best Camilla voice and fave line 😂😁) She LOVES this book, and luckily, I do too! • Helen and Lynn are the dream team behind the Tacky the Penguin books and about a gazillion other gems...I've actually got another one of theirs to share soon! If you need a good story, head to the good old L section at your local library and you are sure to find one 😘 • Thanks for the recommendation @ejesanders!! 👊🏼💕 • • • • • • #ihomeschool #iheartbooks #picturebook #picturebooks #childrensliterature #kidsbookstagram #yeskidsbookstagram #readaloudrevival #kidlitpicks #kidlit #childrensbooks #kidslit #raisingreaders #readaloud #checkitout #bookstagrammer #sahmlife #preschool #repeatread #365homeschool #raisingkinley #book #bookworm #booklover #littlebookworm #kidsbookswelove #homeschoolingmom
Did you see our craft stick fairies a couple of weeks ago? Kinley decided those little ladies could use some under-the-sea sisters, so we busted out our new bought-special-for- @get.creative.with washi tape and made some MERMAIDS! Introducing Kelly, Blueberry, Rapunzel, and Donna 😁💕💜 • • • • I just put out some: ➖ jumbo craft sticks ➖ yarn ➖ sequins & rhinestones ➖ googly eyes ➖ skinny Sharpies ➖ WASHI TAPE! and Kinley and I sat down with Nancy the Hot Glue Gun (I almost peed my pants when K chose that name 😂😂) and got our mermaid on! • • • • Aren't they cute? 😍 The perfect mash-up of @artcampla's #getcreativewith Washi Tape Week and @staysmartartclub's #smockson Beach Vibes Art Week, right? 😎🙌🏼💕🏖 • • • • Happy Weekend instabuddies! Don't forget to post your beachy @smockson together art...today is the last day! 😁😘
MORE LETTER PRACTICE! You might have seen this one in our stories yesterday, but it was such a hit I had to share it in a regular post too 😘 • All you need for this one is: ➖small letters (these are the little magnetic ones from the Target One Spot -- you already guessed that though didn't you? 😜) ➖an empty baby wipes container or a small opaque bag ➖wooden craft sticks (we used some mini ones that we already had, but all normal sized ones would work just fine!) • Put all of your letters in the wipes container or little bag. We started with the wipes container, but Kinley was having a hard time getting her hand back out of the hole with her fist closed around a letter, so we ended up switching to a little cloth bag. The idea is just that the letter they are pulling out is a surprise...doesn't sound that exciting, but trust me, somehow it is to little humans! 😜 • So, reach in, pull out a letter and have your little build it out of craft sticks. I had to help K for the first few to get her mind wrapped around the concept but after that she we good to go! Her G was way more impressive than what I had in mind 👌🏼😍😁 She DETESTS worksheets, but we've gotta get those letters worked out somehow, so getting creative is the only option...well other than fighting and stressing which is not something I'd like to mess with! I've got a few other winning ideas for ya, so stay tuned if you have a tracing hater at your house too 😘😁 Happy weekend!!
SURF'S UP, DUDES! 😎🏄🏻♀️🌊 Kinley and I broke out the contact paper and IKEA watercolor pencils yesterday and got our super simple Beach Vibes Art #smockson for some surfboard decorating. • Did you see the @createlaughlearn post last week about using contact paper for resist art projects?! BRILLIANT. And it worked like a charm, thanks Michelle 😘 • Kinley wanted heart polka dots so I cut some out for her to put on her board, and I went with a plain old classic surfboard stripe 🤙🏼🏖 • Such a simple process art project: 1️⃣ Cut decorations out of contact paper and stick them on your paper surfboard -- make sure those edges are stuck down tight! 2️⃣ Cover the surfboard and the contact paper with paint -- any kind will work! 3️⃣ Let the paint dry for a little bit if you used watercolors or watercolor pencils, and then lift up those contact paper stickers -- TOTALLY GNARLY and ready for hangin' ten...or on your fridge 😉😎🏄🏻♀️ • Water you waiting for?! Get your sea bass in gear! 😜😉 We wanna see what kind of beachy art tricks you've got up your wetsuit sleeves! 😍👊🏼 Just follow the usual steps... ⛱ Make some art WITH your kiddos and post a pic of your teamwork art, the artwork you created side-by-side, or a pic of you and your little in the process of creating together. ⛱ Tag it #smockson ⛱ Follow @smocks.on, @cara_raisingkinley, @toddler_tornado, @momma_teaching, and our guest host @staysmallartclub for your daily inspiration 😘 • Oh, and, SMOCK ON! 😎😉
Kinley's got a new favorite letter practice method and I just had to share! 💕📝 • I saw a super cool video from @playtolearnps on Facebook yesterday with a whole bunch of ABC practice ideas and this was one of them. • I just put colored Epsom salt in a regular old plastic IKEA kiddo plate and handed Kinley a paintbrush. I flipped all of our new Target adorable alphabet magnets over so she couldn't see the letters/pictures and she flipped them over one at a time and wrote each letter in the salt with her paintbrush. So simple, right? • K loved it so much she did the whole alphabet TWICE! I couldn't keep this giant success to myself 😍 Hope it works as well for your kiddo as it did for mine 😘😘
Meet Kinley and Phoebe Jellyfish, human girl Kinley's two favorites gals from our paper bag puppet smack 💕🐙 • This is such a super simple activity! All you have to do is: 1️⃣ Paint a paper lunch sack. (We painted the side that didn't have a flap.) 2️⃣ After it's all dry, cut tentacle fringe from the bag's top all the way to the flap. 3️⃣ Glue on googly eyes and make a Sharpie mouth. 4️⃣ Gently open up your jellyfish puppet just in case the paint has sealed any of the sides a little, pop that little cutie on your hand and 🎉LET THE PUPPET SHOWS BEGIN! 🎉 • We've been talking about what different groups of animals are called since our last zoo trip and Kinley thought we needed more than two jellies to make a smack, so we EACH made two. She named hers Kinley and Cara 😜 and I named mine Phoebe and Monica 🤓 and luckily they all get along swimmingly! 😉😉 • Have you taken a look at all the extra speSHELL beach vibes art popping up over at #smockson?! TIDEally FINspiring! (It's oFISHial. I'm turning into my father. 😞😜) • Water you waiting for?! Get your own teamwork project rocking and tag it #smockson so we can all swoon over it! Oh, and make sure you're following our crazy awesome guest judge, Ami @staysmallartclub, and all of us (@toddler_tornado, @momma_teaching and I) for more beachy inspo! Happy arting!! 😘😘
SCIENCE PROJECT TIME! The votes are in and @babbledabbledo's WIZARD'S BREW is officially our most favorite experiment EVER 🏆👩🏻🔬💕👩🏻🔬🏆 It's so super simple and crazy pretty/exciting! Wanna give it a try? 😁 • To make your own Wizard's Brew: 1️⃣ Fill a smallish jar (we used a old pickle relish jar from our recycle hoard) halfway with vinegar. Stir in a little dish soap (didn't measure, just let K squeeze some in), glitter and food coloring. 2️⃣ Put a few drops of food coloring and about a tablespoon of vinegar in a couple of other small containers if you wanna try the exciting rainbow-y part of the experiment. 3️⃣ Have your little scientist pour about a teaspoon of baking soda in the vinegar/glitter/soap jar, and stir! Stirring makes the mixture really go bananas 😍 4️⃣ Dump in one of your little containers of colored vinegar when the foaming action slows down a little and repeat...over and over and over 😜🙌🏼💕 • You are definitely gonna wanna put your experiment jar inside another big bin to catch the overflow. We used our big under-the-bed storage/sensory bin and I'm so glad we did -- there is no way a tray would've cut it. • After we had done the actual experiment a few times, I just gave Kinley a big container of baking soda to play around with and we took turns dumping in vinegar and food coloring and squirting soap in the jar and in the big old lake of overflow experiment juice. The dish soap makes the reaction kind of foam instead of the usual fizz and it's seriously addicting. We were both splashing and glittering and shrieking with pure scientific joy for over an hour 😍😉 • We really had our hearts set on a bike ride yesterday, but when storm warning after storm warning and the white water rapids flowing down our street made it clear THAT wasn't gonna happen anytime soon, I had to think fast to turn that majorly huge little human frown upside-down. Wizard's Brew was just the ticket! • K is SUUUPER into experiments right now -- do you have any faves we need to try? 😍😁
I've been seeing so much incredible Target One Spot school loot around here, Princess Kinley (yes she wore her TP crown to Target 😍😂) and I couldn't stay away! I spent $20 and I got: • long sentence strips • a super cool USA map puzzle • a magnetic to-do list • the cutest ABC magnets ever • 2 sets of ABC stickers, one teeny letters & one big • jumbo letter flash cards with playfoam • jumbo number and shape flash cards with playfoam • phonics flash cards • opposites puzzle cards • finish-the-words flashcards Can you believe that?! So much stuff! I actually could easily have spent $50 there is so much incredibly fun/cute learning stuff in those treasure bins right now, but I thought I'd better control myself...what's that old saying? Happy husband, happy weekend? Something like that 🤔😜 If you pick up some cool stuff and share it, tag me! Her Royal Highness and I may need to make a return trip 😉 Happy Monday!
I FINALLY remembered to buy Pop Rocks the last time we went to Dollar Tree! YAY 🎉🎉 They've been on my list since @toddler_tornado's awesome Pop Rock painting post a few weeks ago, but I do this thing where I write out a shopping list, look at it while I'm shopping, but somehow manage to leave without two or three things on my dang list. Am I alone? #mombrain 🤦🏻♀️ ••• ANYWAY -- this one is super simple and suuuuper fun! Kinley and I squirted big globs of paint on our papers and swirled them around until we were satisfied then sprinkled on that cool candy. AMAZING! (The Pop Rocks are extra poppy with lots of paint 👍🏼👍🏼) ••• We swirled the candy and paint around some more with our paintbrushes after we listened for a bit, keep the messy fun going ya know? 😁🙌🏼💕 They were still popping a couple of hours later! Kinley REALLY loved this one, like so much that she managed to stop herself from eating one of the packs of candy so we could try it again 😜 You're gonna wanna put this one on your to-do list, fo sho!
