So seeing as today's #sewphotohop is all about those special occasion pieces - here is a little bit of a progress update on my sister in law's wedding dress 💍👰💒 Started my process (after agreeing an initial design of course) by taking every measurement possible and making her a close fitting block to cut from, next is this stage - the creative pattern cutting! I feel a bit like Rolf Harris Can you tell what it is yet?
Big fan of the old #closeup photo - so here's today's #sewphotohop First look of a hot-off-the-sewing-machine sample - it'll be a little while before you'll see some more but it's a goodie! ...can you tell I love paneling/curved seams yet?
Hello best #sewphotohop theme - I loveeee the insides of garments to be secret sanctuaries of beauty. So in honour of that, here's a behinds the scenes shot of a recent photoshoot I did for our first pattern! Hello all silk, interlining and Hong Kong finish. Fancaaay.
Today's #sewphotohop is a goodie - favourite skill. Great topic @houseofpinheiro Mine for sure is creative problem solving... Which I think is best illustrated by this feather jacket from my honours collection at uni. Being a broke student is great for you (retrospectively), as I really wanted to work with feathers but beautiful ones were crazy expensive! I was so obsessed with the idea I got creative, bought a load of kids cheap craft feathers and hand died them, cut them in half and trimmed them into rectangles, glued and stitched them into bias tape and hand stitched them onto my base jacket. Honestly nothing is more satisfying than putting so many nights of work and tears into something, then seeing it professionally shot, and having your gorgeous models walk the runway - from a massive pack of cheap kids craft feathers off ebay. Invention is my favourite skill!
I'm dipping in and out of #sewphotohop as I'm doing a little pre-move eurotrip, but couldn't miss today's theme - my undeniable knowledge base, OG teacher and basic sewing God is my Mum (n'aw). Although she now admits my pattern cutting skills are better than hers, I know I'll never have sewing knowledge and skill like her. She also owns basically every sewing book on earth, has a stash which would put everyone else to shame and a collection of patterns dating back to my grandma's youth (all of which I totally abuse) as well as teaching me more than my formal training, she literally couldn't be more my knowledge base. I have so few pictures of us but here is a safari selfie from Uganda - excuse the windsweptness. Gush over!
Thought I'd join in today's #sewphotohop seasonal colours - but I'm not one for real seasons. Instead I thought I'd share with you some absolute colour porn which I found when I was first brainstorming the pier&palace visual identity. Allllll the turquoise, gold and sunshine! Cheeky bit of info... These might just be the colour pallet for our first few patterns too!
So I realised this week (after reaching 500 followers woo) that I've not introduce myself! How rude. I've been seeing all your #introduction posts today because of #sewphotohop I thought I'd get involved too. - So here I am, the designer/creator/everything for Pier&Palace - my name's Karen 👋 I'm English but (soonish) moving to LA with my lovely partner. I have a seamstress Mum who taught me fabrics when she taught me colours, so yes I have an insane stash. I studied fashion design at university, and have worked in it ever since (actually I specialised in bridal). I'm lucky enough to get to travel a fair bit - this is my favourite picture of myself this year in Jaipur. I also can talk for days - loving 'meeting' you all today and thanks to @houseofpinheiro for setting it up! Don't be a stranger 😘
Little bit of a Friday food for thought. It's been a long week, but I've got to remember the end goal of creating and working in an ethically and ecologically sound industry! I know, my Friday evenings are wild, I'm cool.
So I've been spending the weekend working on a super special super secret project, drafting my sister in law to be's wedding dress! 💒👰❤💞👗💍 You'll have to wait til December to get many more details, but I know you're all going to go mad for it.
