The red wolf is one of the world's most endangered canids and the only canid solely native to the United States. AZA-accredited facilities and partners are working together to increase the number of wild red wolves through reintroduction programs implemented by AZA’s Species Survival Plan® program and partnerships with government agencies, non-profits, and research institutes. https://www.aza.org/safe-species Alexandria Zoo has been involved in the effort to save the red wolf since the early 1980s. Today, Alexandria Zoo is one of 44 approved zoos and wildlife centers throughout the U.S. that manage red wolves in human care.
Alexandria Zoo supports field conservation efforts for the Chilean flamingo through Zoo Conservation Outreach Group. Thanks to the support of program donors, ZCOG has helped fund transportation costs for multiple field capture and tagging campaigns and purchased solar GPS satellite transmitters that are being used to monitor flamingo movement patterns in the Atacama Desert. The critical data collected enables researchers to better understand extinction challenges and design conservation solutions.
