3rd iteration. Turns out if the surface of the water holds some contaminates the crystals form in flat blooms almost. It happened by accident when a bunch of dust got into the uncovered pot. It’s not clear if it’s a good thing or not. Depends on if I can recreate it consistently or not. It’s a balance of sorts and there is already enough organic randomness without adding another dimension. I’d say ‘time will tell’ but unfortunately that’s not the case. Full on Breaking Bad at this point. This is the result of the second crystal growing test. Got really good development and lattice growth probably due to slowing the cooling down from hour to days. Used sterilized hogs hair mesh to grow them on which resulted in a complete solid brick of crystals. This approach has too many issues so I moved to test solid substrates. Those are still cooling, which means we haven’t completed the recrystallization process yet. Feels more like a lab than an art studio right now, I’ve got burners and all this cookware going. Call Walter White! Growing crystals is maddening. They grow, they dont grow, they grow where I don’t want them. I’ve packed these hogs hair supports into gallons of boiled borax solution and then placed them into an insulated box. Takes them three days to fully cool which gives the time to start forming correctly, then repeat. What I learned in this round is that hogs hair won’t cut it for all kinds of reasons. Rolling In. Image of metallurgical work on glass. Not sure who designed this space but they had an unconventional take on placement and size thankfully. I met the ceo of the neutriceutical company, where this piece ended up, for a showing during SXSW and was blown away at the culture he built for his company. His teams hustle and respect was only outpaced by the amount of fun they were having. Often with art professionals the most positive response one gets is an approving nod and smile. It was refreshing to see this companies enthusiasm for the work. Especially since they had no idea who I was. Final passing test. This will become a full piece now once the client decide on a size. I have been strict about my steel work. Years were spent developing the process and each piece is hard won. The steel has to be sourced, stripped, layered, etched, washed, sealed, tranferred to glass, it requires patience. Once the pieces were complete I wouldnt touch them. - Lately though..... I have really enjoyed pulling the pieces apart. Reassembling them like this. And i am loving it.
