@ponyleagueband is that memory of falling asleep to your Dad singing while you were in the backseat. A Picture of Your Family is the culmination of a lot of back breaking and gigging. But they got the goods to pick up where Dawes and Jackson Browne left off. Check out “Boats” for a poignant memory about fatherhood, growing up, and the Charleston Harbor. #scbestofus18
@gabbierotts explosive Pink Drink Season is a noteperfect takedown of toxic masculinity and giving yourself permission to define yourself. It’s a punk rock tour-de-force. Favorite track is the bone chilling “Be Quiet” which I dedicate to Kavanaugh and any other greasy schlub who alleges #metoo has gone too far. #scbestofus18
@thelasttycoon ‘s debut is a marvel of sonic texturing and lyrical interplay. Gladwin’s songs here are interstellar showdowns with pedal steel and mysterious harmonies. Oppenheimer Blues is the countrified late period of Leonard Cohen we never got. At times Gladwin seems prophetic and elsewhere he’s just as befuddled as us about how it all went wrong.
@total.babe.atl debut was full of hushed songs and acoustic pop gems. The duo traded harmonies through sung novellas about existential skepticism, new romance, and finding peace in the headrush. #scbestofus18
Full disclosure: I co-wrote “Outside Your Own” on this record. But even if I didn’t have credit on the album @cicadarhythm would be a top contender. Andrea DeMarcus and Dave Kirslis push the boundaries of Americana to include locrian melodies and mixed meter compositions. Give “Even In the Shallows” a listen for for bowed bass, fugal passages, pedal steel moans, and DeMarcus’ powerhouse vocal.
@courtneymarieandrews May Your Kindness Remain is a 70s throwback but without the toxic nostalgia. Andrews separates herself from her contemporaries with big stories paired with delicate arrangements. #scbestofus18
