In the U.S., 30 million people over age 16 — 14 percent of the country’s adult population — don’t read well enough to understand a newspaper story written at the eighth grade level or fill out a job application. In Rutherford & Cannon Counties, we Live United against illiteracy through programs like Rutherford Books from Birth. Rutherford Books from Birth, in partnership with Governor's Books from Birth Foundation and Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, provides one book per month to children from birth through age five at no cost to families, regardless of income. United Way enrolls children, promotes the program in our community and raises funds for half of the cost of books and mailing for Rutherford and Cannon counties. Support Books From Birth and education in our community by donating just $25, which provides a child with books for a year.
This man is Saul Bass. He was THE graphic designer of the 20th century, well known for his phenomenal work on movie credits (North by Northwest, Psycho, Goodfellas, The Shining) and his incredible corporate logos. Among his timeless & iconic logos (Girl Scouts, AT&T, Quaker Oats, United Airlines) is the original United Way helping hand. #FlashbackFriday
Celebration is in order for Tim Fallon, with Nissan, our Employee Campaign Manager of the Year. Nissan continues to choose outstanding Employee Campaign Managers. Tim’s leadership team said, “Tim Fallon’s passion to help those in need is evident in his thoughtful approach to constantly improve the Nissan campaign” and “Tim Fallon is a champion for United Way at Nissan. While our campaign is long-established, he doesn’t take the generosity of our employees for granted. We are proud to announce that our Volunteer of the Month is Stephanie Lasley! Let's hear it for her in the comments! Stephanie has been a key player in the Doughboy Challenge 5K for over 5 years. This year she volunteered to serve as the race day committee chair. She led the Doughboy Challenge 5K to success, which benefited United Way with over $30,000 dollars in sponsorship. Stephanie’s countless hours of going above and beyond proved successful. She did a fantastic job of taking the lead, laughing in the face of challenges, & sprinting to the finish line. General Mills and their leadership team continue to prove excellence in everything they take on. Stephanie's outstanding leadership and dedication to our community makes Stephanie a well deserving of Volunteer of the Month. • • • • • #LiveUnited #Volunteer

UW partner food bank had a woman pass out on their front steps waiting for our doors to open one day (she got there very early) because she had gone so long without eating she passed out from hunger. They also have had numerous women find us as their first stop in escaping abusers because their primary goal is being able to provide the basic necessities for their children after escape before they are willing to take that leap and leave. It’s hard to believe this happens in Rutherford and Cannon Counties. Because of you investing your time and your money people where we live have hope. Thanks!
