I'm willing to bet you take your shoulders for granted. Shoulders, much like the rest of our bodies, aren't fully appreciated until they hurt or don't function properly. But once an injury does occur in your shoulder girdle, the road to recovery will be long. Shoulder injuries are one of the most common injuries, in part because our shoulders are actually comprised of two separate joints which gives it more mobility (throwing a baseball) but also less natural stability (than say, the hip joint). . So what is a shoulder girdle? Hint: it's not a fancy new undergarment 🙈Its actually the set of bones (specifically your collarbones, shoulder blades, and arm bones) that make up the boney structure of your shoulders. And learning to turn on the muscles that surround your shoulder girdle will amp up the toning power of every plank, push-up, or upper-body exercise you'll ever do—all while protecting your shoulders from nasty injuries like rotator cuff tears and tendonitis. . In all of our #bellabarre classes we work to not only protect this joint from being strained, irritated, or torn by keeping the shoulder securely working within its socket and using smaller, more isometric movements to engage the muscle system without unnecessary risk. Our instructors are highly trained to help you work to keep that joint healthier, longer so you can keep up with everyday tasks and avoid potential injuries when you decide to play a pickup game of softball. . Throughout our carefully designed classes, you'll be mindfully engaging many of the upper body muscles we tend to neglect—like your rhomboids, lats, and the serratus anterior muscles (which are located along the sides of your upper ribs)—creating stronger shoulders, a leaner back, and better posture. #betteratthebarre #bellabarrestrong

Petzinger, MD, assistant professor at the Keck School of Medicine of USC and a neurologist at Keck Medicine of USC specializing in the care of patients with Parkinson’s disease, is studying the effects that skill-based exercise and socialization have on mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and executive function (EF). She hypothesizes that activities involving balance, eye-hand coordination, leg-arm coordination, reaction time to moving objects/persons and dynamic gait (such as barre) combined with a minimum of three hours spent with friends or family a week will help improve EF and may even reverse MCI.
