This post is simply to say thank you to all yoga teachers. It’s pretty normal for us yogis to have a “favorite” teacher or to judge a class. I am guilty for sure. And what I realized last week is how dare we?! We become yoga teachers because yoga has touched our lives so much we feel compelled to share it with others. To be a yoga teacher you have to stand up in front of a group of people and lead them both gently and powerfully into self-discovery. Yoga teachers have to balance delivering physical benefits with spiritual nuggets that help you connect the dots between your practice and your daily life. A yoga teacher puts themselves in a place of vulnerability every class so that we as students can have one hour of peace and release. A yoga teacher has to trust that what they have to give in that hour is good enough … every class. And when we first start teaching we have to step up onto the big stage with a racing heart, shaky voice and pockets full of self-doubt but we know with practice one day we will shine. At Glow my goal is to support our students and teachers to grow into the best version of themselves. We start with exactly where you are not where you think you should be. I hope our new teachers are inspiration to new students. If we as teachers are willing to step into the studio green, and spend time learning and practicing then we are authentic examples to lead. So if you’ve ever had a yoga class/teacher that you have judged as better or less than, remember that your teacher is a person that has dedicated themselves in service to you. At one moment during our advanced teacher training last week I became overwhelmed to be in the presence of people who care so much about teaching yoga they are willing to invest and put their lives on hold for a week to cultivate their craft. Some of us have practiced for years. Some of us have taught for years. Some of us just began the journey and all of us are in it together. That is why yoga is community. Tag your yoga teachers that have inspired you to walk with more peace in your life and to dare to step on to a big stage and try something new.
Charge up for the week ahead with an ahhmazing Restorative yoga class and soundbath tomorrow 4 pm with @swan_michelle in gulf shores
Myth #5 I’m too old to practice yoga. I don’t bend like that. We bend so we don’t break. Warren here practices yoga nearly every day. He along with a few other of our most inspirational yogis is 70 years young. Warren is a two-time ab challenge champion and teacher training graduate. He consistently shows up to his mat doing things with his body now he never imagined he could do 20 years ago. A Harvard graduate and retired JAG lawyer, Warren also continues to inspire us with his humility and willingness to grow mentally and spiritually. Yes you too can do yoga.
