pro-friend tip: when your friends move, visit them. i remember realizing this when so many of you gorgeous people visited me when i lived in SLC or every time i get to go to omaha to see @alesedeans and meet her friends and see her city. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ when you move away you can feel like your life gets split and you are simultaneously navigating two totally different worlds. but then three beautiful souls hop on a plane and meet your friends and explore your campus and snuggle your dog and stay up late chatting with your roommates and all of the sudden your worlds are bridged and you start to feel a little more whole again. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ grateful for these three humans. this weekend did my heart good. . . 📸: @brooke_alexandria630
and sometimes life is just really strange and the today show sends a crew to durham to interview your friends the same day that there happens to be two gigantic trees getting chopped down in the next door neighbor’s yard so you use another professor’s house as their living room last minute and yet everything comes together beautifully. segment will air holy week.
i am nothing without the women in my life. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ my four “little” sisters whom i want to be like when i grown up. my mom and mamo and gunit and aunts. #thecore from elementary school. my role models and mentors and dozens of adopted mommas. the amazing women i’ve worked with and for. my forever soulmates/besties whom i’ve collected along the way. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ i am nothing without the women in my life. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ they have spoken life and love and dreams into my dry bones when i have forgotten who i was. they walked me down the aisle… then picked up the shattered pieces when everything fell apart. they’ve moved me across the country twice. they cheer me on and cheer me up. they see a hope and future for me that i can’t imagine possible. these are my people. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ i am nothing without the women in my life. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ who are the women you would be nothing without?
“you can cut all the flowers but you cannot keep spring from coming.” -pablo neruda . all of the heart eyes for these beauties that remind me that new life sprouts after the coldest and darkest of seasons. . p.s. i had no idea so many flowering trees exist in the world. spring is quickly becoming my fav north carolina season. . #plantseedsofdefianthope
how often do you join thousands squinting toward the heavens in wonder? plus, we were with the scientists who had some hand in making this launch happen—the joy was palpable (but maybe that was just the rocket rumble (aka nerd heaven)). i love humans. i love space. and now it’s time to go watch apollo 13 and hidden figures and armageddon (except not the end).
this little book has haunted my bookshelf for months now. i’ve been too afraid of carrying elie’s story. but “if we forget, we are guilty, we are accomplices.” i’m still not sure how to hold the grief and unspeakable trauma contained on these pages, but “what all these victims need above all is to know that they are not alone; that we are not forgetting them, that when their voices are stifled we shall lend them ours, that while their freedom depends on ours, the quality of our freedom depends on theirs.” [quotes from elie wiesel’s nobel peace prize acceptance speech]
