When this awesome family met me for their early morning family session, the first thing Greg (dad) said was, you know you got a flat tire? How embarrassing ... no I didn't. I'd driven up a dirt road to look at the location and the tire bead had slipped out. And now I was hanging out with a bum wheel. But no worries. I folded myself and my camera into their vehicle and on we went. We ended up in this beautiful field, taking in the morning air and 360 degree views of Zion National Park. Then afterwards, Greg wouldn't take no for an answer and helped me put on the spare! Thank you so much, and I hope your whirlwind tour of Zion and St. George made for a perfect Easter weekend! #gearhartphoto #familyportraits #utahfamilyportraits #southernutahfamilyphotographer #utahfamilyphotographer #stgeorgephotographer #families #southernutahphotographer #takeahike #pbxp #focusonwhatmatters #zionnationalpark #adventure #zion #zionphotographer #zionfamilyportraits
Shhh, don't tell Ingrid before she gets home ... but I just installed a new piece of framed art on our own walls! This is one of our favorite photographs by @mfeltphotography from a little stroll we took on our wedding day. It's magic ... a frame and a little extra light really make it sparkle. This memory is what it's all about.
The Spirit of Hope Gala was a great success! Thanks to everyone who made silly faces in our photobooth!
Ingrid and I have been spending the week visiting friends in Los Angeles, with a mandatory stop at @therippedbodice. What a wonderful, empowering bookstore. More of this. @isundberg
Sometimes, try taking things off and putting them back on in a new way. #art #undergarments #istilllovela
Ingrid and I explored Zion and had several wonderful conversations today. There's something about experiencing that feeling of being a little part of a big place -- and having wonderful conversations -- that helps me feel whole. @ingridgearhart
It's a short flight to LGB; I plan to use the time brainstorming about the future of my business and new goals for how I photograph.
Go get lost and find each other today. : : : #zionwedding #zionengagements #zionelopement #getlost #valentinesday #pbxp #focusonwhatmatters #love
I've been quiet here lately. I've been photographing families sharing adventures together, and documenting their interactions and connection with each other. It's a departure from family portraits as we usually define them, and it's been exhilarating to see kiddos and parents explore our little corner of the world. I'll have more to share about that later. Ingrid and I also took a quiet drive to Zion after her dentist appointment today, and watched the post-rain clouds making wonderful shapes on the cliff walls. Our little corner of the world is amazing.
Ingrid and I took a weekend trip to Salt Lake City, and had a wonderful day visiting my nieces and their boys. Here we all are at sunset at the Natural History Museum ... some of us even smiled! Thanks for visiting with us, Asia, @taliagearhart, @winniebagel, @heroictommy, and @samaniegoangel! @ingridgearhart
A Sunday surprise: a bluegrass band at the coffee shop.
Family portait time is winding down! Here's an awesome family from last year ...
No filter needed for this paradise. Ingrid and I went #sundaysploring today and chatted about wonderful new photography ideas. Fall leaves always remind me how everything changes and grows and waxes and wanes, and my mind has been going toward how to photograph more genuinely.
@ingridgearhart and I mark two years as an old married couple today, and many more years as partners before that. She's my amazing, strong and beautiful unicorn. We keep looking for new adventures off the beaten path ... have any ideas what we should explore next?
This gorgeous and regal German Shepherd named Cassie was 14 years old when the Castanedas came to us. Cassie is family, they told me, and that spoke volumes. The kids had all grown up with her. We wandered slowly and tried to give Cassie lots of breaks during the session; she was arthritic and needed time and love. My favorite thing was how one ear sometimes flopped down, but if I made kiss-y sounds from behind the camera it perked right back up. Today I learned that Cassie just passed away. I'm honored to have met her, and I hope the photo on their fireplace mantle can bring this beautiful family many more years with Cassie.
This was quite the moment: Almost high noon, and the world’s light source just blinks out. In its place, a giant eyeball the color of coal is staring down at us. It had been getting colder, but suddenly, it’s downright chilly. For the next two minutes, it's all I can do to take a few pictures and then remember to just stare back at it.
Sneak a peek at these two, who came with us on a little wedding inspiration adventure. We played in a desolate world of apocalyptic glam, in which we live life our own way, and a little fire between lovebirds never hurt. Oh, and Carly + Robert are getting hitched this Saturday. I’m chomping at the bit to show you more inspo from this shoot! The sun dies, and is reborn. Here’s a haunting view of the solar eclipse I witnessed last week from a wind farm outside Idaho Falls. This is the final moment of totality, when the sun peeks out from behind the moon and creates what is called the “diamond ring” effect. The darkness is retreating eastward, and the edge of the moon’s shadow is visible on the right. The ambiance behind me is suddenly bright again, which lightens up a foreground windmill that was totally silhouetted. I’ll post some closeups too, but this image is the closest visual I have to try and describe what it feels like to be suddenly wrapped in a celestial shadow. It's simply cold and mesmerizing and quiet, except for the whooshing of a turning windmill, and the gasps and whoops of the humans sharing an experience together.
Keep on holding hands. Keep on laughing. Keep on smiling. Never forget why you fell in love.
