Our space is ready to do some learning. The big kids just woke up. We will ease into our day with handwriting and their choice of a for fun activity book or computer learning game while I read their read aloud. Today is science day so we are all super excited about that. #thegoodandthebeautiful #bravewriterlifestyle #homeschoolmom
Highlight reel!!! Now let's hope I don't have to do that again. I hate going out in the snow and I really hate the mess of wet layers and wet footprints in my house afterwards. Ahh but then there are memories so I fake it as best I can.
I need to lesson plan for the week and I have photos to edit but I've decided to give myself a little quiet time before the kiddos wake. They are sure to want to go outside. Here's to hoping they wear themselves out and all take a nap. I know my eldest child (husband) and my littlest will have no problem napping. It's those other two that like to keep me busy.
Today's library haul!! We are breezing thru the spiderwick chronicles so I figured we should get the rest for this weekend.
Finished our lessons by 11 today so we could head to the library before lunch and little mans nap. Refreshed our stash before the snow hits. I'm prepping for warm fires, lots of reading, and lots of painting with my babies.
I was painting and I before knew it the littlest wanted to join, then the big, then the middle. They painted and painted and I read them the rest of our first book of the spiderwick chronicles. I didn't end up getting to paint much tonight but I'm quite alright with that.
For science today we continued our talk from last week on the oceanic zones. Ava LOVES the strange and beautiful creatures of the deep sea. (Do not tell her they are ugly...trust me...she will just go off on a rant) We created an oceanic zone jar just to have as a visual aid throughout our unit study. I'll take a picture of that tomorrow once the layers settle back out a bit. It's still pretty mixed up from all of the pouring. We also got in our box with our supplies from #toolboxesforteaching today to go with the marine biology curriculum from #thegoodandthebeautiful which we will add to some other resources for our science unit study for the winter. Check out my IG story to see what came in our box.
It's easy to support and help your kids work on their gifts but the struggle is to learn how to support and help them through their weaknesses. Hayden is super gifted in math. It's a natural process for him. He is able to do so much in his head and breezes thru his work. Today he finished one of his main math workbooks. Reading though; thats the struggle. Complete opposite of his sister who had always read well above grade level. We never had to teach her to read. Hayden was convinced he'd never read, that he would never get it. So much so that I finally discovered he could read, he just lacked the confidence. He wouldn't try because he thought he'd be wrong. He could read so many stacks of sight words but open a book and he'd shut down. So I went back to the basics, pulled out the easiest readers I could find on his shelf and told him you can do this and he did and he was so proud. So we will work on building his confidence and the rest will all follow.
A little sample of our day today. The kids were tired from yesterday. Ava had dancing, singing, and acting class last night and we didn't get home until 9pm after being gone in Richmond all day. So they stayed in pjs and slowly made their way through their work. They filled out their field trip journals, did their daily work with language arts and math, Ava did a little state capital matching, and Hayden worked on spelling. We started a new read aloud ( the spiderwick chronicles) today. It can be hard to find books that engage both a 10 year old and a 6 year old but I think this short series might be a good fit. I also snapped two pictures of Ava with the books she has read so far this year. We will do this with every book they read so we can make a collage at the end of the year. We also started our geography journey of the United States. We started in our own amazing state and learned a few new things about it. We love Virginia and its history but we are excited to learn more about other states as well.
I painted a little calendar to put in our homeschool area for Hayden to mark off the days on. I wanted some thing pretty and not so school like. A fellow homeschool mama posted this in one of my homeschool groups and it was perfect. She drew it and gave instructions on how to trace it. It takes me forever to draw things so I was so grateful she did the hard work and shared it. I'll have to see if she has an Insta and share it or tag her somehow. Anyways I need to cut my pages and assemble them and get this displayed.
