"One of the things the book and exhibition look at is Bill’s relationship with the Archibald Prize. I love the challenge he put to them year after year, sending in an artwork that was both brilliant and a challenge to the Archibald’s – and the art world’s – tendency to take itself very seriously. Very often, his entries subtly reference a classical work of art, in this case Goya’s portrait of Carlos IV of Spain on horseback. The Goya portrait is an interesting one, since a narcissistic king would see the pomp in it and find it flattering, and yet it’s open to the rest of us too see pomposity, and something a lot less flattering. I think Bill wanted to explore some of that, and so there he is, in his farmer’s gear, on the back of a horse that’s not quite the noble steed. Now that I’ve seen it close up and taken a good look at his facial expression, I wonder if there’s a hint of a knowing look on his face, as if the Bill on the horse is in on the joke. The finishing touch was to call it not, for example, William and Mabel, but Equestrian self-portrait – another subtle nudge at inflated senses of importance. After we’d discussed this painting and the influence of the Goya piece, I googled the Goya portrait to take a look at it, and one of the first sites that came up was one offering to reproduce great works of art on coffee mugs. That seemed so nicely aligned with Bill’s skewering of pomposity, I decided we had to have one for the exhibition." — Nick Earls 🖊 #NickEarlsHighlights 📘'By the Book' exhibition curator and best-selling author Nick Earls shares his thoughts on Bill's 1987 Archibald Prize-winning painting, ‘Equestrian self portrait’. “During a time not so long ago, the Aboriginal population of this country transitioned from a free civilisation to a nation conquered. In the process, thousands of years of ecological and spiritual power and cultural knowledge were diminished, and many customs and traditions of our original people were lacerated – with many lost forever.” Shannon Brett, curator, ‘Rite of Passage’ Open until Sunday 16 August, 'Rite of Passage' responds to the significance of the year 2020 – 250 years since James Cook first arrived on our shores. "I’m shifting the documentary gaze of the camera away from land as real estate and expanding on principles of detachment from hard bed ownership. The real estate becomes an unreal estate and, in a way, connects more strongly to virtual reality and dream reality.” Leah King-Smith on her artwork ‘Evocations’ 2020 Thank you to visual art teachers from around Australia who joined us online this week for our ‘Analysing Art’ online workshop with 'Rite of Passage' artist Dr Leah King-Smith and Dr Charles Robb (QUT School of Creative Practice) 🎨💻 Stay tuned for future workshops! #RiteofPassageQUT #QUTArtMuseum #QUT #artteachers #teachersresources #qutcreativeindustries Photo by Louis Lim

"Across his career, Bill has painted very few portraits of other people. His relationship with Ray Hughes was a very important one, and I wanted us to see Ray Hughes. It was quite a bonus to learn of a portrait of gallerist Ray Hughes that Bill had painted early in their relationship … with bunny ears and teeth. This was a great chance not just to see Ray, but to see him in a work of Bill’s that many people haven’t seen before." - Nick Earls 🖊 #NickEarlsHighlights 📘'By the Book' exhibition curator and best-selling author Nick Earls shares his reflections on a portrait of legendary art dealer Ray Hughes, which Bill painted early in his career. “The best arguments in the world won’t change a person’s mind. The only thing that can do that is a good story.” Richard Powers, 'The Overstory'. We had the pleasure of Julia and Ken Yonetani joining us from Japan at this week's online Texta Book Club session! The artists had chosen to discuss 'The Overstory' by Richard Powers, which received a lot of love and light existential discussion 😉 We'll never look at trees in the same way again... 🌳🌲🌴 #Texta #TextaBookClub #QUTArtMuseum
