Tom Rooney surprisingly announced his intention not to seek re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives, Democrats were licking their lips at the opportunity. And, while taking a Republican’s seat in a very red district will be difficult, two Democrats say they are up to the challenge. April Freeman, who lost to Rooney in 2016, and Bill Pollard will face off in the Aug. 28 primary for the right to take on the Republican candidate Nov. 6. Bill Akins, Greg Steube and Julio Gonzalez are vying to be the Republican nominee. Pollard, who lives in Sebring, is a graduate of Kansas University, an author and a respiratory therapist. He left the Democrat Party for a while in 2009 but returned and is focused on claiming the District 17 seat behind strong support he said he has in rural areas of the district. “I am a working person and connect with people in Sebring and Highlands County,” Pollard said. “I am from an area with diverse interests — but especially citrus and retirees.” Pollard said voters may be ready for a change. “I think people are restless,” he said. “They are struggling to live on pensions and people don’t like the direction our country is going.” He already has a plan to get things done in the Republicancontrolled Congress if elected. “I want to build a coalition in Congress to make a difference. It would be bipartisan. We need more cooperation between parties. The country is too fractured.” Pollard has a long list of things to get done. “We need to get out of Afghanistan, it’s costing too much. We must lower our national debt, it will haunt our children. Workers’ rights need strengthened. We need Medicare for all. We have jobs but no one is trained to fill them.
