Can you believe this was a year ago? We're celebrating our first birthday on Friday, August 25th (details to come), and we couldn't have gotten here without you! Thank you to every yogi that has walked through our doors, we are in gratitude to you!
Well hello there August! Perhaps this a time when you journey outside of your daily routines for vacation, for a day out in the sun, or for completing a task you've set aside to accomplish when it's nice out. In this journey outside of routine, we can remind ourselves to stay connected to nature, both our inner nature of who we are and the natural world around us. This month on our mats we'll dig deeper into the 5 elements within us and nature, and our combined union. See you soon!
Our instructor Lori shared this beautiful photo and quote that she lives by, from Sri Pattabhi Jois, an important figure in the yoga world. Often we find inspiration on our yoga mats for change that takes place off our mats, and we do so by staying committed to a steady practice. But these changes can take time to materialize, and that’s why we refer to yoga as a practice! Join Lori for a fiery flow on Monday, July 31 to build Tapas, that energizing heat and intensity within. Congrats to our two expecting instructors, Josie and Emily, who have 4 weeks left before their babies are due to arrive! They are resting, nesting, and taking care of themselves with lots of yoga, water, and fresh fruits (watermelon for Josie and blueberries for Emily!) Join us in wishing them good luck as they embark on this new chapter of their lives! For Josie it'll be her second kiddo and Emily her first! They look forward to returning to Mindful Elephant Yoga in the fall.
We enjoyed the latest blog post on Mteto, our studio's orphan elephant, and thought you might also! To shake the cloudy and cold weather the morning of June 26, the elephants decided to engage in some games to warm up. But Mteto was grumpy and didn't let another female orphan get close to three of the baby orphans! We feel your grumpiness, girl! It happens to all of us! A big thank you to those who donated to the Fundraiser for Mteto on Monday night. From June through August, 2% of proceeds from the sale of our 5, 10, and 20 class cards and retail items go to the organization caring for Mteto, The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust @dswt. Stock up now and help out a great cause! Read on: http://www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/asp/individual.asp Photo: @dswt
Students tell us they love practicing in the morning sunlight as it shines through our windows and bathes them in natural light. It's a beautiful reminder to let our inner light shine from our mats out into the world. Let's shine together! Reserve your spot at www.mindfulelephantyoga.com #offthematmoment
When we embrace the practice of yoga, we embrace a life of truth-seeking and our role as a lifelong student. In #YogaBookClub we’ll explore this ocean of knowledge and perspective one book at a time. You're invited to engage in #asana #practice, #groupdiscussion, and #meditation to dive deep into the book of choice. The first installment of Yoga Book Club focuses on Parts One and Two of YOGA Discipline of Freedom: The #YogaSutra Attributed to #Patanjali translated by #BarbaraStolerMiller. The Yoga Sutra is a collection of 196 sutras, or #aphorisms, which outline the practices of #yoga. We will guide you through a #restorative practice while parts one and two of the Sutras are recited aloud. After allowing the words of the Sutras to wash over the mind in a state of conscious #relaxation, we will move on to a guided group discussion and meditation. Registration Fee - $20 Only a few spots remaining! Mon, Jul 24, 2017 at 7:15 pm - 9:00 pm SIGN UP AT MINDFULELEPHANTYOGA.COM/WORKSHOPS

Lokah Samastah Sukhino Bhavantu - May all beings everywhere be happy and free, and may the thoughts, words, and actions of my own life contribute in some way to that happiness and to that freedom for all. Happy Independence Day from @mindfulelephantyoga!
Accepting that life is not easy and we all face hardship, our Monthly Mantra for July reminds us to stay the course. Our daily practices of tapas, or self-discipline, can teach us how to pick ourselves up and deal with whatever life throws our way, and that can be a profound transformation in our lives. Here's some inspiration, from author Deborah Adele: In those times when we don't know how to get through the next minute of what seems unknown and overwhelming to us, can we hold on until we are somehow blessed by our struggle? Discipline will mold us into someone of great depth and profoundness if we let it. Can we stand the heat of being dismantled and changed forever by the fire?
Let's celebrate the holiday weekend on our mats together! We have a modified schedule and then we return to our normal schedule on Wednesday, July 5. See you on your mat!
This week in #BacktoBasics, we explored #BalancePoses. In many ways, balancing the body on one leg is much like balancing a seesaw. The same laws of physics apply: If you align the center of gravity over the base of support, you balance. If you don't, you don't. It's as simple as that. Of course, since your body is quite a bit more complicated than a seesaw, #balance is often not so simple to achieve. Our quote of the week to inspire your practice is in honor of this month's mantra. The concept of surrender can be challenging, especially when we want to steer the course of our lives in a certain direction. Knowing when to surrender to things outside of our control can be powerful, and it can even help drive us forward in the direction we want!
Our orphan elephant, Mteto, has a blog! We are following her story, and she recently played a chasing game with a few other elephants. The game came to an end when two of the elephants got in a minor squirmish. Murit, another adopted elephant, accidentally pricked the inside of Ngilai’s ear with his tusk. Read on: www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.org @sheldrickwildlifetrust 2% of all 5, 10, and 20 class card packages and retail items sold in June, July and August will be donated to the care of Mteto.
Yoga can be so much more than a physical practice. And in fact, it's designed to be. While yoga doesn't create a transformative shift in every class, it may over time, and we truly believe in the health benefits of yoga for your body, mind and spirit. In honor of this year's theme (Yoga for Health), we join in celebration of the International Day of Yoga on Wednesday, June 21 and encourage you to practice with us! http://www.un.org/en/events/yogaday/ Photo: @unitednations
This month's mantra, Ishvara Pranidhana, is a mighty but important one. We ask the ego to remain quiet so we can find surrender to the events, sensations, and feelings that may happen in life. This week's Back to Basics class featured Backbends and Twists. For beginners, these poses can unlock space in the body that was previously untapped, bringing a release of tension and stiffness. In this link are backbend poses designed to help open the body. www.yogajournal.com/poses/types/backbends Photo credit: @yogajournal
