  • Did you know that the right brain is responsible for empathy, intuition, imagination and creativity?...and that the right brain develops first? “It is where we wonder, dream, connect and come alive. Through the right brain we dwell in the space of no-time, in being absolutely present. While the left brain is more interested in outcomes or product, the right brain cares much more about process—the journey is what matters, not the destination.”
.
“Understanding this we can better appreciate why play is so important in child learning and development, and why we need to be extra careful with the amount and timing of academic agendas created for children; with how much we emphasize product—what kids have accomplished at school—versus process—who they are becoming and what they feel in their explorations.”
.
Movement-to-Music is our unique curriculum that offers an imaginative environment to explore dance concepts appropriate for each developmental stage, which is why classes are separate for each age group - 2, 2 ½, 3 and 4. Live piano accompaniment is an important aspect of these classes – to create an atmosphere of spontaneity, encourage the imagination, develop the dancers musicality, and so that the teacher can focus on the class rather than searching through a playlist. Parents can enjoy watching the class from our observation areas that feature two-way glass.

  • The Traumatic Brain Injury Care Coordinator at Children’s Rehabilitation Service recently shared, “I discovered your studio about the time that you developed the first movement to music class for children with special needs. I had two patients who participated, and watching them in class made me an instant fan of your program. To see how much your agency has grown to provide this level of community service is such a testimony to vision and creativity. We are so blessed to see you continue to grow. Thank you for making the joy of music and movement accessible to all.”
.
Our Movement to Music curriculum was developed in the 1970’s by Jennie Robertson and the early Children’s Dance Foundation dancers and musicians to include preschool children and children with special needs, including sight and hearing impairments. The curriculum growth was closely tied to the burgeoning insight into child development and the fresh approach to more holistic education for young children. Movement to Music was being created to serve everyone, and in the very beginning that included Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind. Jennie and her team traveled there to gain a better understanding of how to teach students with sight and hearing impairments. Live music was such an essential part of that exploration. Students with hearing deficiencies could place their hands on a piano or an instrument -- or have bare feet on a floor, feel the vibrations, and dance! The teachers and musicians were very creative to ensure that everyone would participate and benefit.
.
Forty+ years later, we now partner with thirteen sites, including The Bell Center, United Ability and a handful of pre-K programs, to provide movement and live music to students with special needs. Additionally, we have two studio classes especially for children with Down Syndrome and/or Autism.
