Conservation Outcomes joined Msinsi, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife and KZNDARD to assess the biodiversity value of Nagle Dam Reserve. This reserve is a critical component of the Umgeni River catchment which provides water to the major economic and urban centres of Durban and Pietermaritzburg. The reserve is part of a wider conservation initiative to protect the Umgeni catchment between Albert Falls and Nagle Dams #biodiversitystewardship #umgenicatchment
Private Nature Reserves are a key component of the protected area network, that are now receiving significant attention through a partnership project between Conservation Outcomes and CapeNature. Close in 150 private nature reserves were declared historically, and these are being verified and validated through this project generously supported by the Table Mountain Fund - Brackenbyrn Private Nature Reserve is one of these a amazing gems in the Plettenberg Bay region that we visited this week. #fynbosforever #privatenaturereserve
Conservation Outcomes has spent the past 2 days working with the SANParks Planning section, together with the Regional and Park managers, in exploring models for protected area expansion for both national parks and the corridors between parks. These provide exciting opportunities for incorporating new land into our protected area network. SANParks #biodiversitystewardship #protectedareas
This week the Gidjana-Bevhula initiative was launched. This project is being implemented by Conservation Outcomes in partnership with South African National Parks, WWF South Africa, Conservation South Africa and Meat Naturally. It aims to establish a new protected area on the boundary of the Kruger Park, to implement a range of ecological restoration works and to establish a sustainable rangeland initiative for the two communities. It will also be developed in support of Conservation Outcomes efforts to establish game meat markets as important income stream for protected areas in the region. #communityconservation #wildlifeeconomy
Securing new protected areas represents an essential response to our environmental challenges. Today we participated in the Umzimvubu Catchment Partnership Programme, where 6 communities are working towards collectively secure a portion of their land into a Protected Environment - the Maloti Thaba tsa Metsi Protected Environment. Conservation Outcomes and Environmental Rural Solutions are assisting to draft the management plan for this new protected environment #protectedareas #biodiversitystewardship #communityconservation #watercatchment
Conks must go to the Table Mountain Fund for supporting this important work #privatenaturereserve #protectedarea
Conservation Outcomes started the year off with a visit to Thula Thula Private Reserve, to assist them with the initiation of their protected area declaration, and to finalize their Elephant Management Plan - formal security of more protected areas is a key response to addressing many of our environmental issues #protectedareas #elephants #conservationinaction #zululand
2020 is here, and with it we introduce the Southern Ground-Hornbill which has been named the 2020 bird of the year by @birdlife_sa Conservation Outcomes, in partnership with BirdLife South Africa, is working on securing a number of different properties for conservation which are home to these, the largest hornbill species in the world. They are endangered as there are fewer than 1500 of these birds remaining in South Africa. Securing habitat is vital to sustain these spectacular birds as habitat loss, poisoning and electrocution are their major threats.
