Sometimes the best ministry is offering joy. A few years ago, several Jesuits in formation attended the People’s Climate March in NYC. While there, I hoped to get a picture of the enormity of the crowd. I asked Thomas if he would be willing to sit on my shoulders in order to get a good shot. Suddenly, dozens of photographers turned to capture the image - and how can you blame them? It’s not exactly a common sight. While we ended up with a great picture of the crowd, I am glad that I could bring a smile to the faces of those at the March. The shrine is closed to the public for the winter but I was able to stay with the Jesuits who live on the 200 acre shrine. They follow in the footsteps of the French Jesuits who built a mission here in the 1630s. The rebuilt mission and museum is fascinating and educational. The Jesuits now work in the local hospitals, prison and serve five parishes along with welcoming 15 thousand tourists a year. They are very hospitable to candidates to the Jesuits. If you are looking for somewhere to live, work and pray wile discerning your vocation, this may be an option. At any time there may be up to as many as 20 priests and brothers at the Shrine. What a blessing to spend the weekend with them. #beajesuit #jesuits #jesuitlife #amdg #martyrsshrine
“Some of my earliest memories are from anti-war protests and vigils praying to end abortion. When I was maybe 6 or 7, I remember cutting a picture of John Paul II from my favorite LIFE magazine special on him for a protest sign against the War in Iraq. The papacy and protest, liturgy and social justice, cathedrals and the marginalized have always held equally privileged places in my heart. I guess I was born to be a #Jesuit. We embrace seemingly polarized things: God and world. When I first visited a Jesuit community I saw books by Scott Hahn and Joan Chittister beside each other on one bookshelf. I knew I was home. Paul VI said Jesuits should be “at the crossroads of ideologies, in social trenches...at confrontation between burning exigencies of humanity and the perennial message of the Gospel.” I really can’t think of anywhere I’d rather be.” Billy Critchley-Menor, SJ #extra_ordinarylives #humansofsj
The Catholic faith unites the world, and the Society of Jesus is my international home. I go to Peru, and we are there. I go to Honduras, and we are there. Korea, France, Spain, Lithuania... I travel abroad, and my eyes fill with tears of praise when I hear ‘Holy, Holy, Holy’ or ‘Santo, Santo, Santo’ or ‘Saint, Saint, Saint.’ I can feel Christ bringing the world together. It's to his Society, the Society of Jesus, that I belong. Because the whole world is his, the road is my home. #extra_ordinarylives #humansofsj (David Inczauskis, SJ)

“I was the kid in high school who avoided taking a fine arts class at all costs. I met the art requirement by taking American Popular Music in my final semester. But this year, the school where I do ministry was in a bind and needed someone to step up and be the art teacher. Can you see where this is going?? Thoughts like those I used to have about the priesthood - someone else can do that, you need someone but you don’t need me(!) - started going through my head. Thanks to a Jesuit friend and mentor who encouraged me to step up to the task, I am now thriving as the kindergarten - 3rd grade art teacher. And yet this experience has become so typical in my Jesuit formation thus far: being asked to do something I never thought I could, and letting God’s grace do the rest.” (Jack McLinden, SJ) #extra_ordinarylives #humansofsj
