Today this sweet girl, my second oldest niece, is 15! (And my 3rd oldest will be turning 15 also in just 6 months.) These images are from a session I did with her and her brother in the studio in January, the very first studio session of 2020, after I got to pick them up from school so they could stay over with me on a cozy, ❄️ snowy night. We went brunching the next day, stomping through inches of fresh snow (and slush) to Over Easy. That is by far one of my best memories of 2020. We did the portrait session the next morning, and after my SIL picked the kids up, she said she hadn’t seen her daughter that smiley and happy in a long time. I’ve long known the power of creating portraits of someone and bringing out their best, happy self, but I really saw it that morning with my niece. The teen years are such a huge transition, moving from childhood to adulthood, your body changing, getting to know yourself anew and how you want to identify and move through the world. My niece is a violinist, an artist, a scientist, a black belt in Karate, and an animal lover who is very passionate about animal rights. She saved a mouse 🐭 that was going to be fed to the Ecology Club snake and petitioned to stop feeding the snake live mice. She came up with other solutions and wrote an essay on it. She went vegan a while ago, and for her birthday when I asked her what was on her wish list, she said she'd like to just spend time together, and she also asked if I’d try the 22 Day Vegan Challenge. So today, to celebrate her and learn more about her interests, I’ll be a vegan 🥑🥦🍌 for the next 3 weeks. I’ve been meaning to have these images of my niece created into printed artwork for her room so that she can be reminded every day of how I see her: calm, capable, confident. And also COMPASSIONATE. Happy Birthday, A! ❤️
One of jookie’s amazing past assistants, Sherrae, is doing a fundraiser for @assatasdaughtersig Check out this cool, artistic offering she has going and learn more about the important work of Assata’s Daughters: AD was founded, planned, and operated by Black women, femmes, and gender non-conforming people to carry on the tradition of radical liberatory activism encompassed by Assata Shakur, to train up others in the radical political tradition of Black feminism, and to learn how to organize on the ground around the demand for Black liberation, particularly a demand for abolition. In 2018, AD shifted from a collective-model to a formal organizational structure with a board and staff. At the bequest of those we served, the organization has now broadened its scope to provide lessons to young men and boys on toxic notions of masculinity, dismantling patriarchal systems of oppression, and understanding the impact of both on interpersonal relationships. AD continues to be an abolitionist organization led by Black women using a Black queer feminist lens and relationship-based tactics to organize bases of young Black people in divested-from areas of Chicago. #Repost @lynx.imagery with @get_repost ・・・ The virtual bouquet fundraiser is still going on!🙌🏾 . . 100% of the proceeds go to a local Chicago charity, led by black women, @assatasdaughtersig! . . They’re $25 each & I’ll custom make one for you featuring silhouettes, pets, loved ones or a selfie! HMU!😸 . . Don’t have the funds rn? That’s ok! Sign a petition to defund CPD! Link in bio. 💜💜💜 . . There’s this giant RV parked in the lot at @bakerdemschool and families keep asking if it’s mine. 😁 While I AM renting a car now (after happily not having owned one for the past 19 years) to easily and safely get around for outdoor socially distanced sessions, I’m keeping it to a modest four door as opposed to this behemoth. But it’s a fun idea! Taking jookie on the road around the country, the whole world as my studio.... maybe when we’re past this pandemic. 😉 #trustthejourney
Back at Baker! And, as always, happy and honored to get to work with this amazing school and so many families I adore. I was suppose to photograph the annual photo fundraiser in March, but it ended up being the week that the schools (and everything non-essential) closed, and we all went into shelter-in-place. I never doubted that we would figure out a safe way to let the show go on, though, and I’m LOVING the outdoor set-up with the school’s brick walls.
