Hi guys! If you watch my stories you’ve probably been following along with all this lately, but if not I figured I’d update y’all. My kidney disease has progressed to the bottom of stage 4, and my function is sitting just above the need to start dialysis. So to prepare for that inevitable, I had surgery wed morning to create a permanent dialysis access in my arm. It’s called an AV Fistula, and they went in and combined an artery to a vein, creating basically a u-turn, haha, where some of my blood going away from my heart will turn there and go back, instead of continuing down my arm. They do this so the vein will enlarge, and grow strong, and that is where my dialysis needles will be inserted for treatment. (I’ll put a diagram in the swipe for a visual for y’all.) That surgery went really well! The vein was larger than they thought from vein mapping before, so that was great news! The dr cut in my arm crease, so I won’t have a horrible scar, and then my access will be in the upper inside of my left arm. For now we have to let it grow for a few months, and then we will go in again for a more in depth surgery and raise it all to the surface so it’s easily accessed during dialysis treatments. For anyone that will have to go through this, or is just curious, recovery hasn’t been too bad! I haven’t needed many pain killers, and my arm feels pretty good, compared to what I thought at least. Haha. Since some of my blood isn’t going all the way down my arm anymore, I have some weird numbness and my hand is freezing cold! Haha. I actually am already getting used to it though. I can feel the blood pumping through the fistula which is so weird, and I can even hear it sometimes. So creepy. lol In all honesty, I think the hardest part of this is what the surgery represents. Which is an upcoming huge shift in my lifestyle, when my function gets too low and I absolutely need to start dialysis. I am going to hold off as long as I can handle, and hopefully I can make it another 6 months or so. 🤞🏻 I appreciate y’all so much. All the messages, sweet sentiments, love, and kindness I am getting from all of you has been beyond amazing!! I’m admittedly (contd in 1st comm)
You guys! I got the sweetest care package ever today form @babyafterkidneytransplant and her project donors, and @sillykidneys ! 😍❤️ A sweet note, this adorable silly kidneys keychain, a target gift card and some lip gloss! So so caring! Made my day, especially with my dialysis access surgery in a couple days! Stacy puts these together for kidney warriors, and they bring so much happiness to someone going though a very tough time! If you can, take a minute to check out her bio with a link to help spread the joy! And check out @sillykidneys too!! This young girl is only 9, battling a rare kidney disease herself, and she started silly kidneys to spread hope and joy to others fighting kidney disease! 💚 She’s amazing to say the least!! Take a minute to look at her profile and give her some words of encouragement, and if you can, donate to help provide build a kidney kits for other amazing kiddos!! Thanks again Stacy, Erin, and all the donors, means so much to me!! Can’t wait to pay it forward 😊
