  • 06/19 - Today we celebrate Juneteenth! On June 19th, 1865, Major General Gordon Granger arrived at Galveston, Texas to announce that slavery has been abolished. This was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. Though we have made milestones since slavery, there is clearly much more that needs to be done.
Juneteenth is a day for celebration of freedom and perseverance; it is also a day for recognition, education, and self-reflection. For this reason, we’ve created a short guide with quick facts and a list of resources to help both us and hopefully you to learn more about the holiday! (Attached in bio, feel free to leave other suggested resources in that comments so we can add to the document.) We encourage you to join us in educating ourselves on the hard-fought history of our Black community and to reflect on ways we can all show support in the ongoing fight for justice.
Happy Juneteenth! :)

  • To our members, alumni, family, and friends,⁣
⁣
Michigan Fencing stands in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement. We stand with protestors. We stand with our Black athletes, friends, and community. ⁣
⁣
We are devastated by the deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and all Black and Brown lives taken so unjustly. Police brutality and racism of all forms have no place in our community and we are dedicated to fighting it. We are redoubling our commitment to antiracism, equity, and diversity, as a Michigan club sport, team community, and a part of the larger fencing community. ⁣
⁣
We ask you to take action with us today. There is a link in our bio for a list of suggested donations if you are financially able, learning resources, and information on protest rights and protest health and safety.⁣
⁣
During these difficult times, it is crucial for us to work and act as a community toward justice. ⁣
⁣
In solidarity,⁣
UMFC⁣
