Om Prakash Chouhan of Mhow dominated the final day’s proceedings to win the Glade One Masters 2021 with a massive four-shot margin at 17-under-199. Chouhan shot a five-under-67 at the magnificent Glade One Golf Resort in Ahmedabad on Friday to make up for his heartbreaking loss on the PGTI last week.

Gurugram’s Manu Gandas took second place at 13-under-203 after firing a 71 in the final round.

Om Prakash Chouhan (35-33-64-67), the overnight joint leader along with Manu Gandas, was off to a flying start with birdies on the second and third thanks to his accurate lob wedge approach shots that left him short putts. Om Prakash all but ran away with the match after his eagle-birdie on the eighth and ninth gave him a six-shot lead over nearest rival Manu Gandas who was one-over at the turn.

Chouhan produced a magical pitching wedge shot from the fairway bunker on the eighth for the second day in succession as he once again found the hole from 115 yards and picked up an eagle-two just like he had done in round three. The birdie on the ninth came as a result of a 15-feet conversion.

Interestingly, ‘OP’ as Chouhan is fondly referred to by his fellow pros, had also dominated last week’s event at Kalhaar Blues & Greens in Ahmedabad having led for the first 3 days. However, a quadruple bogey after finding the water on the seventh hole in the final round put paid to his chances last week and saw him finish tied third.

Chouhan’s 6th career win earned him a prize money cheque of Rs.4,84,950 & lifted him from 23rd to 13th place in the PGTI Order of Merit. He will now earn 3 OWGR points for his win that is likely to push him up significantly from his current world ranking of 823.

Manu Gandas (35-30-67-71), the other overnight joint leader, picked up 6 birdies & dropped 5 shots on Friday to post a 71. He ended up matching his previous best result on the PGTI with his runner-up finish.

  • Lessons learnt, OP ready to take the road to redemption

@thegolfinghub

A big buffer can often be counter-productive, as @chouhan.op70 found to his chagrin last week. OP teed off on the final day of the Gujarat Open with what seemed a comfortable five-shot lead. If was a first for him in a career spanning nearly two decades and perhaps led to a lowering of guard. It was not deliberate and but for the tee shot on the 7th finding the water and the subsequent quadruple bogey, he could have come away unscathed.
That was not to be, and Friday last ended with Sheetal, OP’s go-to person in certain golfing matters of late, consoling her distraught husband over the phone after that calamitous round. “She said that’s sport; it wasn’t your day,” says OP. But he knows better. The ball striking has not been this good in a long while, and had he persevered instead of the meltdown after his drop shot landed in a divot, OP could have been in line for his second consecutive title @pgtitour.
Armed with the lesson “that no lead is big enough and aggression does not always pay,” OP has refused to be shaken out of his zone this time at the #GladeOneMasters2021. Not even a couple of telling stats --- the eight-under 64 on Thursday almost matching the course record of nine-under 63 on Day 1 at the Kalhaar Blues and Greens last week can stir him.
Even as he speaks about playing to his strengths --- controlling the ball well and solid wedge play, while keeping in mind the weaknesses, there is a sense of unease. Tied for the lead and three shots ahead of the field, the final-round scars of last week will not leave OP in a hurry. He does not want it that way too. “It was a first in my career and hope there is never a repeat.”

Om Prakash Chouhan of Mhow produced a super eight-under-64 while Manu Gandas of the DLF Golf & Country Club, Gurugram, shot a determined five-under-67, as the duo held the joint third round lead at 12-under-132, three shots head of the rest, at the Glade One Masters 2021 being played at the Glade One Golf Resort in Ahmedabad.

Panchkula’s Angad Cheema also fired a brilliant seven-under-65 to lie third at nine-under-135.

Bengaluru’s Chikkarangappa, the winner on the PGTI last week, carded a 67 to be placed tied fourth at six-under-138 along with Yuvraj Singh Sandhu of Chandigarh who slipped two spots form his overnight second after returning a 72 on Thursday.

The unique format for the tournament is as follows. The first two rounds consisted of nine holes each. The cut was applied after 18 holes. The third and fourth rounds will now comprise 18 holes each. The tournament will be played over a total of 54 holes.

Om Prakash Chouhan (35-33-64), who led for three days at last week’s event in Ahmedabad before finally finishing third, is back in contention this week thanks to his standout performance on Thursday. Chouhan hit his sand wedge to perfection on day three as he landed it within five feet on five occasions to set up birdies.

Om Prakash, who was overnight tied third and three off the lead, also had two birdie conversions from 10 to 15 feet and a lone bogey but the highlight of his round was the eagle-two on the 17th where he holed out from the fairway bunker about 115 yards out.

Manu Gandas (35-30-67), the overnight leader by one shot, mixed six birdies with a bogey in round three. Gandas made three long birdie conversions from a range of 10 to 25 feet. He was five-under through 14 holes but couldn’t make further gains on the last four holes.
