1000 Nasi Lemaks / Kelab Kelapa Community Project The Coconut Club is more than a restaurant. It is a conversation about kindness. Friends, family, and customers alike knew our chef-founder Eng Su for his kindness and generosity. Likewise, we have been overwhelmed by the support of our fans and customers since we announced the start of our Oddle deliveries. Today, that spirit of caring is no longer optional. Businesses are finding it hard to keep the lights on and people are genuinely concerned about how and when to put food on their table. In continuation of the drive for kindness that embodies the spirit of The Coconut Club, we are taking a step outside normal business logic to kickstart an initiative to support the vulnerable in our community, at a time when all around us is bad news. Since 13 April 2020, The Coconut Club has been partnering with Beyond Social Services to deliver our signature Nasi Lemak to feed vulnerable families and individuals in 8 - 14 neighbourhoods around Singapore. We realize that uncertain times like this call for something we can count on. That is why we will provide 1000 nasi lemaks every week until conditions in Singapore improve. This would not be possible without our restaurant's owners, combined with the goodwill of our landlords and the Singapore Government. We hope it will be the meal our recipients most look forward to in their week! Never before has the link between kindness and survival been so starkly presented to us. The Coconut Club and its community will do everything it can to rise to this challenge. The Coconut Club moved so he could take over our original place and we hope you’ll give him the same love and support you’ve given us over the last 3 years. He’s pulling out all the stops, serving Chye Png style, all the dishes he’s learnt as a child and over his long career as a chef. It was unbelievable for us to meet Massimo Bottura & Joan Roca in the flesh at “The World’s 50 Best Restaurants” launch party @TanjongBeachClub earlier this week. We feel so lucky that at The Coconut Club we’ve managed to assemble a team that aspires to hone their craft on one of Singapore’s own dishes, Nasi Lemak. And it’s because we intend to always keep the dish within the context of Malay culture that Massimo & Joan’s efforts in their own cuisines have been a source of great inspiration for us. None of us at The Coconut Club have ever eaten their food and in a way we have only admired them for their reputation but after meeting these 2 great chefs we realised that what moves us is not just their dedication to their craft or their culture but their dedication to support others in the industry like ourselves and the humility that they bring to that endeavour. Almost all our guys at The Coconut Club have attended the HSBC Rugby 7’s over the last 3 years. It’s a rare team building moment for us as we open 7 days a week and we don’t always get the time to spend an afternoon having fun together. But the coolest thing that happened yesterday was having our Executive Chef, Hendra, leave us at 5pm for the Indonesian Embassy to vote for this year’s Presidential Elections! This power photo he took shows us his dedication both to his work and to his country! FYI he had to wait it out in a 2000 person queue sia!
Otak Master Wak is a man so vibrant and incandescent he can only be looked upon once in a while and only in black and white like how one may gaze upon the sun during an eclipse. He prepares our fish with the same respect an undertaker has for the dead bodies that pass through his mortuary. He may never have met them before but he knows they have been loved. The flesh, stripped from their skeleton is pounded with his bare fists till it has the texture of an overweight baby. He adds the fish meat together with his custom made spice paste into a steel bowl that is magically un-stainable. He mixes the ingredients by moving his gloved hand in a J shape while his other hand rotates the bowl in an anti-clockwise motion, his body rocking back and forth like Michael Jackson in a scene from thriller. Finally he prepares the packets of this magical mixture with finely steamed banana leaves so when you unfold them, they open like the perfectly formed lapels of a Giorgio Armani suit. Master Wak. Shokunin or madman? Cook or artist? These are questions only a person paid for the length of their Instagram posts and not the quality of them will ask. #thecoconutkakiz

In this world that we live in now it just feels unconscionable to operate our business in this manner, that for the sake of profit we manage food supplies in a way that maximises our revenues but distorts market efficiencies in our food economy that creates this unnecessary burden on our planet.
