Although French forces first landed in #Algeria in 1830, their conquest of the country was far from instant. The eastern metropolis of #Constantine, perched on an elevated bluff and led by the Ottoman ruler Ahmed Bey, was one of the last holdouts. The city's central square, popularly known as the Place de la Brèche, marks the spot where the French army finally breached Constantine's walls and overran the city in 1837. The expansive square is home to Constantine's theater, city hall, several hotels, and the central post office (pictured).
Early on a weekend morning, sunlight glints on the silent Perrégaux bridge in #Constantine, a clifftop city in eastern #Algeria. Completed in 1925 and more commonly known as the pont de l'ascenseur, this #footbridge spanning the Rhumel River gorge is still in operation today. Cross it during rush hour or on a windy day and you can feel the bridge sway!
