I was a bartender throughout my twenties & some nights, after the bar closed, many of the servers from local restaurants came over & my dear friend & fellow bartender David & I used to open up a bottle of wine, sit on top of the bar & take turns reading Kitchen Confidential by @anthonybourdain aloud to everyone. That book brought so many of us together — and Tony, he did his best to bring the world together through his TV shows. He was one of my heroes — not because of his ability to travel the world — but because of his brutal honesty & his willingness to show up, demons and all & follow what he loved. I’m going to miss you Tony. So sorry you had to leave so soon. My heart is with your family & all of us who have a broken heart shattered from suicide. My love is with you.
Oh my goodness! There is a whole slew of emails in my inbox this morning from artists telling me how much they ♥️❤️♥️ 21 SECRETS Summer Studios already ☺️. My heart is absolutely bursting into tiny bits of candy 🎉— I love that others are feeling just as excited as me. Anytime I try something new, there’s always that ounce (or maybe more like pounds) of hesitation & doubt that creeps in. I’m so glad that I didn’t listen to it. Few things make me more happier than to know that the work I do creates jolts of creativity & joy into this crazy world we live in. Thank you to everyone that reached out with your kind words — I wish I could squeeze the gajeebers out of you! .. .. The word that popped out for this #101wordpaintings was postulate. Postulate is something you assume is true for the basis of reasoning or argument. How do I know that? I was really good at Logic class in college. I excelled at it so well that I probably should have been a lawyer instead of an artist. The crazy thing is that as far down the spectrum Logic class was from my art studies, to this day I can still see how those abstract mathematical classes were so influential in the work I do today as an artist, teacher, & entrepreneur. .. .. I went to art school for 3 & a half years on scholarship before I walked into the dean’s office & quit. Even though I was quite young, I knew that I needed something much more than what I was receiving in my excellent education at art school. I wanted to continue my studies in a university because I was hungry to learn more about the world & bored with the “art world”. I was thrilled as a kitten to take economics, biology, geology, and political science classes. To me, this holistic view of life felt like a necessity as an artist. .. .. Today many of my students voice the fear that maybe it’s too late. That maybe they’re crazy for thinking they can be an artist this far into their life’s journey. I personally think they’re prime candidates for the job — especially in the times we live in now. .. .. As an artist skill & technique develops from practice, inquiry, & mentorship— 3 things that are readily available to us because of the internet. But the stuff that can’t be taught — the real nectar of being an artist is life experience. .. .. Powerful artists see the world in a unique way & express it. The big misconception is thinking that your life has to look/feel extravagant, eccentric, or epic. Actually I think all of that glamour gets in the way. Powerful artists are real people who have small children, sick parents, sticky divorces, jobs they hate, people who betrayed them, shrinking bank accounts, & cancer treatments - but still rise above to make beauty, meaning, & wonder of the world. Those are the artists needed now. So keep on trucking, is what I tell them. Keep on trucking, every step forward counts.
