Green is really my color
I made this little video of how I altered my @deer_and_doe_patterns #melilotshirt Apologies, I’m sure I butchered the pronunciation. I couldn’t get this video to upload on my blog so I thought I would post it here. #ashleyakersblog I also added fish eye darts to the back of this shirt to help with fitting.
Close up of #newlook6149 knit wrap top with my #brumbyskirt I’ve only worn this top once, I think the print is not my usual vibe but I like the fit a lot. I think I’ll make another in a solid knit. I used to sew with knits so often but I haven’t been finding many that I love and buying online you never know what you will get. #ashleyakersblog #memadeeveryday #handmadewardrobe #imadethis #megannielsenpatterns #newlookpatterns

Super excited for my first order from @stonemountainfabric this ikat is not what I originally ordered (they ran out) but I picked this as a sub and love it! The mora slub in rust is a little more red than I expected, but that’s what happens when you buy online. Good thing I just got my @dharmatradingco dyed, I can over dye it to be a bit more orange and brown like I pictured. Great experience with Stone Mountain, their customer service is top notch. Can’t wait to visit in person someday. #fabricstash #ikat #stonemountainfabric
#bpsewvember day 30 2019 Plans: I’m working on warmer clothes for winter. That is hard for me because even though I don’t love Texas summers I would rather sew and wear summer clothes. Most winters I just layer and never have enough warm clothes so I’m trying to remedy that. I’m almost done with a long sleeve #melilotshirt and will make #landerpants next. Both patterns were already adjusted to fit so that makes things go so much faster! We had a warm and sunny couple of days so I wore this linen knit short sleeve cardigan that I made last year. I cut up and traced off a pattern from an old thrited rtw piece. I would work better in a stretchier knit. I have hardly worn this one even though I’m a big fan of pink now. I used to sew with knit often and hope to get back to that in 2019 as well. I also plan to continue my pants fitting journey and finally make some jeans. I really enjoyed #bpsewvember2018 the best thing I got out of it was the confidence to post my vintage swimsuit and the return of my sewing motivation. Critical thinking about my craft really helps me hone in on what I want to make, what I will actually wear and why I do what I do. On that note, I plan to finish the #colettepatterns wardrobe architect that I started back in the summer. Thanks for hosting @bimbleandpimble it’s been fun! #ashleyakersblog #handmadewardrobe #imadethis
#Bpsewvember day 29: Collection Vintage 70s sewing patterns. I can’t get enough. I love the art, the pattern designs, everything. I use them too. I’ve made 3 overall dresses, 3 swimsuits, 1 skirt, and 1 dress. Forever searching etsy and flea markets for the next one. #70sfashion #vintagesewingpatterns #bpsewvember2018 #patterncollection
Im cooking dinner 🥘 in the apron that @gretchenschermerhorn made for my birthday out of fabric that she hand printed! I love having talented friends. Now if only I can get her birthday present finished. It’s already late, like I said earlier I’m a procrastinator! Love my apron G!!
Bpsewvember day 28: Bad Habits Mine is procrastination It’s in my nature. My dad says, why do today what you can put off until tomorrow? Lol Im always planning and daydreaming about sewing and dyeing fabrics, but it takes me forever to gather supplies (I’m also cheap) and get a project to completion. I also only like to sew in small sections of time. I’m not good with a last minute project, I don’t like rushing and end up not liking my work. My actual sewing habits are great these days. I have cultivated wonderful patience when it comes to sewing, a trait that I am not generally great at. I make muslins for fit, sometimes multiple. I trace patterns so that i can reuse them in other sizes later, I clip my threads, press my seams, I take my time. This skirt sat unfinished for months, only needing the buttons and buttonholes. Sometimes I take too much time. But you know what, I only have myself and my wardrobe needs to answer to and I like it that way. I was once self employed making jewelry and time management was not my forte. I definitely worked hard, especially leading up to an art show, but I lost the love of jewelry making and the drive to do it. I ruined it for myself. That’s why I have a day job and I sew for FUN. People can’t understand why I don’t want to turn sewing into a business, this is why. #bpsewvember #bpsewvember2018 #handmadewardrobe
#Bpsewvember day 27 mentor: my mom. Though she is a born teacher, she did not teach me to sew. She tried but I was not a good student. I wanted instant perfection. What can I say, I was a difficult child. I am a Scorpio after all. Rather, my mom always created. She taught art, and later sold art supplies and advocated for art education. She was always sewing, playing with fibers in one way or another. She is retired now but has a creative business making eco-dyed scarves. My favorite thing to do with her is dye fabric. I wish there were more opportunities for that in our lives. You can see her scarves at @ecoindigofiber She doesn’t have all the answers but she has a lot of them and if she doesn’t know she asks her friend Lu when I have sewing questions. I’m so lucky to have grown up in a creative household! #bpsewvember2018 @connie.akers
#Bpsewvember day 26: Organization This is my studio in a really clean state. I have an Ikea shelf, the bottom shelves have baskets for storage. I roll my fabrics and organize by type and/or color. For example: denim’s, linens, rayon’s, knits. On the top I have picnic baskets, old suitcases and other baskets for storage. These hold muslin, interfacing, yarn, etc. The comic boxes on the right hold my patterns. Oh and I have magazine boxes for pdf printed patterns on the ikea shelf. My cutting table has baskets for in progress or upcoming projects. I’m thinking about adding a magazine wall rack for patterns that I’m currently working on because my cutting table tends to get cluttered with those. #bpsewvember2018 #ashleyakersblog
We found the cutest little light for our Scotty dinette at Old Home Supply. It’s perfect, I’m so excited! #serroscotty #oldhomesupplyfortworth
Today I’m daydreaming about my first order from @stonemountainfabric that I’m anxiously awaiting. I bout an ikat and the mora slub in Rust. One cropped boxy top and one gathered button front skirt are at the top of my to sew list. #bpsewvember #bpsewvember2018
I fell off the bpsewvember band wagon for a few days but today’s prompt of “craziest pattern” got me thinking. I pulled out this suit that I made for my 40th Birthday trip to Tulum and looked back at the photos that Frank took of me 3 years ago on my bday. I hadn’t been confident enough to share them but Fuck that! This was one of the best vacations of my life and you couldn’t ask for a better backdrop for photos. So anyways, this is my vintage Butterick 5449 swimsuit on Xcacel beach near Tulum. The pattern construction was pretty complex and the print on the fabric is pretty crazy for me. I love it so much! You can read all about it on my blog. . . . #bpsewvember #bpsewvember2018 #ashleyakersblog #butterick5449 #vintagesewingpatterns #imadethis #sewcialist #handmadeswimwear #b5449
Just goofin at the Fort Worth botanic gardens after thanksgiving dinner. Wearing my newest make the #melilotshirt I’ll post better picks soon. Im thankful for so many things, I really do love my life. Happy Thanksgiving friends!
Favorite corner of my casa. Look how cool that new succulent is. I splurged after my long shift at work yesterday, it was hanging out in our floral department. #crassula #crazyplantlady #houseplants #jungalowstyle
#bpsewvember day 20 Never used/worn Sadly this #simplicity1314 Cynthia Rowley knit dress has never been worn outside of my house. It’s cute, it’s sexy, it’s well made, it fits great. But it’s soooo fitted that I would need some serious spanx to not have to worry about sucking in my stomach all the time. I’m actually really proud of this make and really bummed that I don’t wear it and now really wondering why I don’t sew with knits as often as I used to. #bpsewvember2018 #ashleyakersblog #cynthiarowleypattern #simplicitypatterns #handmadewardrobe
#bpsewvember Day 19: Holidays I don’t want to deal with the holidays this year. They snuck up on me, I won’t be with my family for thanksgiving and I work retail. Ugh I used to thoroughly enjoy the holidays but retail sucks that right out of me. I’m about to walk into the busiest day at the gourmet grocery store and sewing is my calm before the storm! I discovered the triple stitch on my (new to me) Bernina for top stitching with regular thread and I’m thrilled! Started a second #melilotshirt right after I finished the first. I never do that. Working on a cooler weather wardrobe for a change! #bpsewvember2018
#bpsewvember Day 18 Ritual: first coffee and planning, daydreaming, browsing for fabric and patterns and ideas. I’m finally cutting into my Ventana twill to make a long pair of Lander Pants. I’m in dire need of cold weather clothes so I’m a bit more motivated than usual.
