Does it count for #sewhappycolor green week if I only altered the green garment? I did make the brick pink top! Anyways, this complimentary color scheme may be my new favorite color combo. #miymarch19 day 19: long game Not sure I have one. I have little to no desire to monetize my craft in any way. Perhaps in retirement I will try again with making things for money. For now I’m happy for this to be just for fun! Some of my sewing goals for this year were to make more gifts (I’m behind on that), sew more with knits (need to get on that), perfect pants fitting (coming along well), make more swimsuits and learn to sew lingerie (hasn’t happened yet). #handmadewardrobe #vintageclothing
#miymarch19 day 18: go to Over the last year I have really tried to incorporate more of my (and my moms) hand dyed fabrics into my #handmadewardrobe You can also see my go to colors here: indigo, pink and camel I love that my makes can be even more unique with one of a kind fabrics. #ashleyakersblog #imadethis #handdyedfabric #memadeeveryday
#miymarch19 day 16: zero waste I cannot claim to be zero waste and have yet to try the new zero waste dress pattern who’s name and designer escape me. It is on my list. However, I buy and use as little fabric as possible, I’m all about playing pattern Tetris! I re-use muslin fabric, I hardly ever use as much fabric for a pattern as the designer suggests is necessary. I get away with that with aforementioned #patterntetris as well as using fabric scraps for facings, linings and bias tape. I have been using up one thrifted pair of silk pants as bias tape for a while and plan to start thrifting garments for fabric re-use more often. Odd size and too small scraps I give to my mom @connie.akers she is a fiber artist and art quilter. This picture is a detail of one of her pieces and the middle ikat was a major thrift store score of yardage that I have made a pair of shorts and a skirt with.
#miymarch19 day 15: kits I’ve never used one. Probably because I’m cheap. I tend to piece together supplies a little at a time. Today I dyed this cotton yardage. I couldn’t be more thrilled. It was a 3 step process of #itajime #shibori I have been collecting dyeing supplies for a few years and hope to start a more regular practice of fabric dyeing. You never know exactly what you’re gonna get and that makes the outcome (especially a good one) even more thrilling! #ashleyakersblog #handdyedfabric
#miymarch19 day 14: repurposed This ikat on this #tessutialice was originally a napkin! I was so pleased with this make and still love this top to death. #ashleyakersblog #memadeeveryday #imadethis #sewingblogger #indiesewingpattern
I finished my lengthened #ogdencami with a ruffle added. I squeezed this out of the same hand dyed fabric that my #sewhappycolor vintage #simplicity8587 was made from. This will be a swim cover up or lounging around the house dress because it is sheer. I didn’t feel like lining it because that would take away from the light breezy feel. Now I need to go to the beach! X #ashleyakersblog #handdyedfabric #imadethis #memadeeveryday #handmadewardrobe #indiesewingpattern #sewcialist #sewersofinstagram #sewingblogger
#miymarch19 day 13: Vintage My most treasured vintage item is this top that my mom made in the 70s. I shortened it last summer and finally wore it. I love it so much! The second photo is the pattern that she used. She found it recently! How cool is that?! I also love sewing with vintage patterns. It’s another thing that I feel can make my wardrobe more unique. Plus I just love the art on vintage patterns, especially from the 70s. #70sfashion #70sfashioncult
#miymarch19 Day 11: happy accident This one was hard for. This #indigodye #jessicadress is my example of never quite knowing what I will get when I dye fabric. This silk noil came out much lighter than I had wanted and at first I was disappointed. In the long run I adore the faded denim feel. I’ll never learn to dip my indigo enough times, I’m sure. I’m hoping to keep experimenting with fabric dyeing as I feel like it makes my handmade clothes truly one of a kind. How beautiful is this @kokkafabric double gauze? My friend Gretchen sent it to me to make her this #simplicity1318 Haori style jacket. Details of this and the version I made for myself are up on my blog. #ashleyakersblog #handmdewardrobe #sewingforfriends #imadethis #sewcialist #memadeeveryday #japanesefabric
This jacket is also on the blog. Made for @gretchenschermerhorn I’m not much of an embellisher but I do love adding a good contrast facing. This time with hand dyed fabric. #miymarch19 day 10: embellishment X #ashleyakersblog #simplicity1318 #selflesssewing
New on the blog today: simplicity 1318 I made this Haori style jacket with cotton ikat from India that I bought from @stonemountainfabric Insides are beautified with Hong Kong seam binding in fuschia silk dupioni. #ashleyakersblog #stonemountainfabrics #ikat #imadethis #memadeeveryday #handmadewardrobe
I got so inspired this week from #sewhappycolor that I dyed this fabric, muslined the pattern, cut and sewed this top all in one week. For a slow maker AND procrastinator that is a big deal! This is my entry for week 1 reds and pinks. I normally am drawn to more muted colors but @katiekortmanart and her fun bright colors have really gotten me excited to think outside the box. I have paired this watermelon pink with cobalt blue. I think it will look great with my magic lander pants as well as teal and light blue. X This is vintage #simplicity8587 From 1978. I made view 1 in size 16. The only changes I made were to shorten it by 2” and leave off the sleeves. I’m wear a size 12 in most patterns of this era, so this is oversized and slouchy. I think it works really well with this gauzy, sheer linen. I had wanted to add some sleeve bands to this but ran out of fabric. I squeezed this top and a lengthened #ogdencami (yet to be sewn) out of 2 yards of 58” wide linen. Yay for #patterntetris X I’m also counting this for my stash busting for day 9 of #miymarch19 X Today is the most beautiful Spring like day here in North Texas and this outfit fits the bill perfectly! I’m ready for you warmer weather. X #ashleyakersblog #memadeeveryday #imadethis #vintagesewingpatterns #handmadewardrobe
#miymarch19 refashion I’m not a re-fashioner. I used to buy things from the thrift store with the intention of fixing/ re-sizing or re-fashioning them but it wouldn’t ever happen. This skirt is an exception. I made it work 6 years ago but now it’s too big again and I need to fix it because I love it. Mostly I hate repairing things even things I’ve made.
#miymarch19 day 7: Hands These hands don’t let me get bored! They like to stay busy. They like to sew, knit, cook, draw, garden and lift weights. I mentioned before that I come by this honestly. My parents were always, and still are makers. Dad makes things with wood and sometimes metal, he’s built houses, furniture, stairs, decks, turned wood, tied macrame, made jewelry, and so on. My mom was a ceramicist, a weaver, a quilter, a seamstress, a fiber artist, a gardener, a cook and a baker, she did all sorts of needlework my entire life. I have no recollection of them not making. My maternal grandparents too, Pawpaw gardened and whittled, granny cooked, baked, sewed, crocheted. And all of my Mother’s mother’s mother’s going back generations did needlework too. I couldn’t NOT make things. I will never NOT make things. I’m crafty, I’m creative, it’s who I am, how I know to be, what I’m interested in, what keeps me sane and what I enjoy. Creativity is something that I admire in others and I am blessed to have tons of creative friends. I even started a highlight where I will be adding links to those friends over time. Enough about me, let’s see your hands! #isew #memadeeverday #imadethis #charlottekahntiedress #kalleshirtdress #landerpants #cktiedress
#miymarch19 day 6: motivation This week in tooootally motivated by #sewhappycolor and all of @katiekortmanart posts about color theory. I dyed and cut out two patterns in a bright watermelon pink. Watermelon 🍉 isn’t my usual color but it’s making me so, so happy. It’s gonna pair so beautifully with teal and blues and all sorts of my favorite colors! In the mean time I was inspired to pair these complimentary colors together and they are also making me smile! Thanks Katie for reminding me of my arts background and helping bring color theory to life. #ashleyakersblog #magiclanderpants #memadeeveryday #imadethis #landerpants #melilotshirt #simplicity2586
#miymarch19 my Nest Here it is In all its messy glory. I am so grateful for my dedicated sewing studio.
#miymarch19 I’m going back to do day 2: rescued I made this tank in 2011 (second pic) out of cotton ikat that my mom gave me. It was #simplicity2586 a Cynthia Rowley pattern. It was long and frumpy so I chopped it off and gave it a cute curves hem. I’m a sucker for a curved hem on tops. I love it now! #ashleyakersblog #imadethis #memadeeveryday
Brief visit with my favorite girl, Karlie Rose, today.
The hot pink silk dupioni that I used to do a Hong Kong finish on these raw edges was recycled from a crazy bright pair of thrifted pants. My mom and dad both volunteered at a thrift store in Wimberley, Texas for a while. I’m pretty sure they acquired as much stuff as they got rid of before they sold my childhood home and moved to the hill country. Anyways, mom gave me some of the hot pink silk from those pants and this is the second time I’ve made bias tape with it for a garment. That pink really pops! #miymarch19 prompt for today was recycled. Also I’m counting this as #sewhappycolor because this pink makes me really happy, especially with that blue. . . . I’ll finally be sharing this jacket made of Indian ikat from @stonemountainfabric later this week #isew #imadethis #ashleyakersblog
#miymarch19 day 3 (i skipped day 2 but intend to catch up later in the week) WIP: So I dyed this lightweight linen yesterday. I’m super happy with the pattern I got! I planned to use it for the top in photo 3 and for week one of #sewhappycolor I may still do that but my husband pointed out that it would be cool to make a dress, and I agree it would be nice to feature more of the shibori pattern. If I do the top I will cut it in a way that will not leave much usable fabric. So now I’m torn! Also, regarding the color, it’s like a coral red and while it’s beautiful it isn’t what I’ve been drawn to lately. I was inspired by @katiekortmanart and her color challenge (this week is reds and pinks). Seeing it against navy I think it could fit into my wardrobe. So what do you think? This top or perhaps an Ogden cami lengthened into a dress? Or something similar to that. I’m rambling now.... #handdyedfabric #ashleyakersblog
Hi I’m Ashley This is me in my sewing studio, which I have been cleaning and organizing today. I live in Fort Worth, Texas with my husband @wirenestsound I grew up in a creative household, always wearing handmade (my mother and her mother always sewing) and surrounded by handmade furniture and decor. My dad is a builder and woodworker. My parents encouraged me to go into the arts, so I majored in metals and jewelry at the University of North Texas. I met my musician husband through college friends and we have a ton of talented artist and musician friends. I feel lucky to know so many talented people. . After college I did make jewelry full time for a few years but lost the love for it by making it into a business. So now I sew for fun, for myself and for my most loved people. I have no interest in monetizing my hobby. I am a slow maker but I’m always thinking about and planning sewing projects. . I’m also passionate about cooking and trying new culinary treats, gardening (in nice weather), weight lifting, traveling and outdoor adventures . Anyways, it’s nice to meet ya! Can’t wait to learn more about other sewists during #miymarch19
There’s a challenge going on for March called #sewbibs i just finished my magic #landerpants convertible overalls a couple weeks ago. Does that count? Regardless I want all the overalls and overall dresses so count me in. I want the #burnsidebibs #turiadungarees #jennyoveralls and many more! I have way more ideas and plans than time. But that’s why it’s called #slowfashion right? Because I’m a slow maker. #ashleyakersblog #magiclanderpants
I’ve always enjoyed seeing how the colors in my instagram feed change throughout the seasons. Just discovered @yearofcolor where you can see a visualization of the year, month or specific dates of colors from you feed. This is last month for me. My color preferences are much more muted than they used to be.
I finally got to #dresslikeacrayon in my magic #landerpants a ready to wear tank from target (one of the three items of clothing that I purchased last year) and my #Swedishhasbeens I even match my floor! I was never a brown person and only recently became obsessed with this orange brown and all colors related: Fox, ochre, amber, brick, terra cotta, etc. #ashleyakersblog #imadethis #truebias #sewersofinstagram #indiesewingpattern #sewcialists #ilovetosew #handmadewardrobe #memadeveryday #magiclanderpants
