The HUNDRED (Historic Urban Neighborhood Design Redevelopment) Plan has been developed by the city of Las Vegas with a ton of community input over the last few years. The plan for the Westside neighborhood is a vital step in identifying the opportunities to link with the past and create a familiar bridge to the future. Presented within the Plan is a strong vision, eight (8) “Big Moves” envisioned with practical projects, the stories of the stakeholders and community members, improvement program ideas, and proposed regulation and zoning, that together, will transform the Westside into a vibrant neighborhood. #AlphaGreats || Brother Thomas Edward “Eddie” Tolan was a ‘29 initiate of the Epsilon chapter - seated at the University of Michigan - and was the first African American to win an Olympic Gold Medal. Brother Tolan was born on September 29, 1908 in Denver, Colorado but his family settled in Detroit when he was 15. He was a standout athlete in both football and track at Cass Technical High School, and was heavily recruited to play football by various major universities. Brother Tolan eventually chose the University of Michigan to further his football career, but was forced to run track after his racist football coaches kicked him from the team. As a sophomore, Brother Tolan broke the Big Ten Conference record and tied the world record in the 100 yard dash. The following year, he broke the world record for the 100-yard dash and 100-meters race! After graduating from Michigan in 1931, Brother Tolan enrolled at West Virginia State College - where he did graduate work preparatory to teaching and coaching at a Negro institution - while preparing for the Olympics in the summer of 1932. He was a top qualifier at trials, and became one of the first two African Americans to hold that distinction. During the 1932 Olympics, Brother Tolan became the first African American to take home 2 Gold Medals - in the 100 and 200 meter race. Join us in recognizing Brother “Eddie” Tolan for his momentous accomplishments and blazing a trail for African American athletes throughout history. #ThereGoesAnAlphaMan #AlphaPhiAlpha #ForThe7Jewels #FirstOfAll #APA1906Network
