Remember Jerry? We first met him in early October. He had just turned 50 and was ready to see his life turned around. That night he was able to get a shower and hang out a bit before he looked for a place to put his sleeping bag and try to sleep. He didn’t have a tent or anything. He was hoping to get into the program at @thecookerynashville. We saw him a week later when he got another shower after getting baptized at a special service under the Jefferson Street bridge. Last night @thecookerynashville posted a video of Jerry receiving his certificate of completion from The Cookery!!! We are so proud of him and grateful that we got to be a part of his journey!!!
One man has made it his mission to help those experiencing homelessness to be able to read. He isn’t a tutor or teacher. He’s Bill. The guy that brings the reading glasses. He’s provided glasses to over 100 people and he is just getting started! Bill’s heart for the Homeless comes from experience and understanding. With his kindness and gentle demeanor he has been able to help people read again! He’s one of our heroes and you can meet him Monday nights downtown with ShowerUp.
ShowerUp is headed to Murfreesboro!!! We are partnering with Murfreesboro Cold Patrol!! They are building a team to pick up the truck to use every Saturday. If YOU are in that area and want to volunteer contact them or contact us here at ShowerUp and we will get you in touch! Thanks Murfreesboro we are so excited!!!
We are looking at strong storms today so we won’t be downtown today. Please pray for those who are in tents, in alleys or just sleeping on the streets all across our city today. These storms could not only wreck their campsites but could be dangerous too. Hail, wind and lightning are expected. As we have places to go, our thoughts are with those who don’t.
What a great day! We were able to have a small group from @rhccinstagram join us. They jumped in and cleaned showers, helped pass out kits, towels and brought goodies and treats for our friends downtown. If your small group wants to come down sometime, just let us know. We would love to meet you.
It is always so nice that when we pull up one of our homeless friends always step up to help us hook up. This helps so much as this part takes a bit especially when it’s just us. They want to help out, they want to contribute and be part of a team just like we do. It’s the best time to talk with them about their day and what is happening in their lives. We are so grateful for them.
What’s in the cart? Everything. This cart’s owner has everything he owns under that tarp. Up and down hills, across streets, and down alleys he pulls it along. Nashville’s population of those experiencing homelessness is expected to rise this year. There are a number of factors involved. But regardless of their circumstances, we want to be quick to ShowerGrace, ShowerHope and ShowerLove.
A man who joined us last night came by the table after his shower. He said “thank you” and placed these coins on the table. He said he just wanted to give back. A heart of gratitude has no choice but to respond with generosity. Last night several people made a point to say “thank you for coming down and doing this”. So touching and amazing. Want to see what it’s all about? Your life may be changed!
Hope to see you tonight!
