Cora learned the word 'snow' recently (because let's face it, it was snowing yesterday here in Ottawa). So, the other morning while the sun was streaming into the living room and Cora was jumping on the sofa, she stopped, pointed and proclaimed snoooow! at the dust dancing around the room. Let this be a lesson to us all that dust is merely Indoor Snow and shall, going forward, be called such as it makes it immediately more charming. #CoraCarberry
Week Three of the @OneRoomChallenge is here! I replaced the previous track lighting in our dining room with a giant secondhand chandelier, painted the ceiling *white* and finally decided on a paint colour for the walls! And you guys, it's actually called 'Kitten White'. I can't. All sorts of pictures and words on the blog today. Link in profile!
Our new @article sofa is here (!!!) and it's as comfortable and delicious as you think it is. It's the most grown up piece we've bought (so far) and are so impressed by its comfort and how well it's made. Special thanks to my co-stylist for this shoot, Cora, who insisted on being in every photo. She was like one of those actors who directs a movie and makes sure to cast themselves as the lead character. More on www.theinteriordiyer.com today! 🛋 #ourArticle
You think they're in their own world and never paying attention, but they're actually watching EVERYTHING YOU DO ALL THE TIME. IT'S TERRIFYING. I turn my back for one second and Cora does this 🛠 #MiniDIYer in the making. p.s. She is very safe. I've shown her a hundred times how to use the step ladder carefully. Cora is a very independent woman.
This weeks @OneRoomChallenge of our dining room update is up! It includes; half painted walls, barely painted ceilings, correctly credited Pinterest images (gasp!) and my hopes that a classy shade of paint is going to cover up the fact that I am essentially a teenage boy. More on www.theinteriordiyer.com!
Same hat. And eye roll. 32 years later.
Weekend vibes 👹
The @OneRoomChallenge kicks off this week and I am very excited to share I'll be designing our dining room as a guest participant! I'm a bit nervous though and wondering if I'll even get close to finishing it in six weeks. Is now too early for wine? More detailed plans and before (well, 'now') photos on www.theinteriordiyer.com! 🍷
I set a reminder on my phone every Monday morning to rotate Cora's toys. This sounds a bit over the top, but I find some toys can loose their excitement after a few days and there's no way I'm going to keep buying new ones, so I keep two boxes of toys in Cora's wardrobe and rotate between the three groups of toys each week. It also makes Monday's a little easier for this mom as Cora is all OH SHIT YOU GUYS I TOTALLY FORGOT I HAD THESE BUILDING BLOCKS AND STACKING CUPS MONDAY MORNING JUST GOT LIT 📦💕
CLICHE ALERT: it's the most obvious ever but every spring all I want to do is clean and declutter. I shared a roundup post today with all my top spring decluttering tips as well as the few things that keep me organised every day (and have done every day since writing about them 4 years ago).
I walk past this building almost every day but only today noticed that the building is called The Champagne Bath. It was a public bath built in the 1920's and housed one of Canada's first indoor pools. Which is amazing because I too like my champagne to be measured in Olympic amounts. p.s. The pool was named after the mayor at the time, Napoleon Champagne.
I often get asked how I get so lucky with some of the secondhand items I find on @KijijiCanada (and similarly, @Adverts.ie in Ireland). It's a bit of luck, yes, but I definitely have some methods I've fine tuned over the years. This week I sat down and published my top tips for buying secondhand items online and I think you might be surprised by some of them (total click bait right there). Full post on www.theinteriordiyer.com this week!
I know I've found something I really like by the unflattering sound I make the moment I see it. After I waded through hundreds of chandeliers on @KijijiCanada (PSA: a dented drum shade is not a chandelier), the moment I saw this beauty of a chandelier I made a sound much like Stewart's mom circa early 2000's Mad TV. It looks and functions so much better than the previous track lighting. Before and after photos and more details on the blog today if you're curious! Or just really bored! #LowerTownApartment
On the blog today I shared details of my experience using the @GoForApp. GoFor is a company that collects and delivers building materials for contractors and DIYers (actual terminology on their app so you know I'm in), but can also be used to collect and deliver almost anything (ie - furniture). It's something I've used as a person with a newfound penchant for buying large heavy pieces of furniture without any means of being able to collect myself; an invaluable service for us these days. Head over to www.theinteriordiyer.com for more details!
One thing I miss about our apartment in Dublin was being able to smell the Guinness factory when we opened the windows. To me it smelled like burnt potato skins 😋
I have so many projects I want to work on and write about and photograph but I'm kept nicely distracted by a little certain someone these days. Cora's molars are coming in so there are lots of tantrums and tears and cuddles and whining. Oh god the whining. And the FAKE CRYING. Like, looking at me between her fingers to see if I'm paying attention. She's hilarious, but this mama is glad it's Friday 🍷
#FBF to Wednesday 🌨 Almost all the snow is gone again already.
Does anyone else ever feel like doing a 'Gilmore Girls' and go back to using an old school flip phone? I think about it. A lot. Technology is wonderful, but I don't know that I like how accessible it is and a big part of me often thinks about how nice it was before smart phones. Tonight until tomorrow night is National Day of Unplugging and I am definitely on board 💆♀️ (Incredibly sweet 'Unplugged' book by @mrsteveantony that I happened to pick up for Cora from @chaptersindigo last week. It is lovely).
