EDUCATE,ENTERTAIN, INFORM: UTM STUDENTS LEVERAGING SMARTPHONES AND SOCIAL MEDIA, CREATING CONTENT AS AWANI RANGERS Date: 12 December 2017 Time:8.30 am – 5 pm Venue: Seminar Room 1, Block D05 A full-day training programme with Astro Awani journalist, Hilal Azmi, was carried out in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Johor Bahru to develop the necessary skills for students to become UTM Awani Rangers. The programme, which was organised by the Centre of Community and Industry Network (CCIN) in collaboration with Language Academy, aimed to provide students opportunities to enhance soft skills, gain professional media content practice, engage with community, and create content to be published on an online platform provided by Astro Awani. A total of 86 students from 12 faculties signed up for the programme with 76 undergraduates and ten postgraduates, including 12 international students from seven countries (Bangladesh, Egypt, Turkmenistan, Yemen, Pakistan, Syria, and Iraq). WhatsApp Group Chat has been created and is in use to sustain the community of UTM Awani Rangers and to support other students who could not attend all the sessions due to classes and other academic commitments. The programme, which was hosted at Language Academy, UTM Johor Bahru, provided students an overview of independent and mobile journalism, with self, social media and smartphone as tools. The first half of the programme also entailed students interacting with Astro Awani newscaster, Ashwad Ismail, in a live question and answer session, and culminated in the students engaging with both on and off campus communities, collecting facts and opinion, to create content in the form of texts, photos and videos, completely immersed in the role of an Awani Ranger. In the second half of the programme, Hilal Azmi reviewed the content produced by students and engaged them into thinking and discovering other ways to make their stories better, while the Deputy Director of UTM Corporate Affairs, Dr Abdullah Mohd Nawi, briefed them about rights and responsibilities, autonomy and accountability as UTM students. SCHOOL HOLIDAY PROGRAMME: DO-IT-YOURSELF DIVAS Date: 13 December 2017 Time: 8.30 am – 5 pm Venue: Seminar Room 2, Block D06 A total number of 11 primary school students ranging from 7 to 12 years old attended this school holiday program. This program was filled with fun hands-on activities. Students had the chance to build their own terrarium, decoupage key holder, and creatively fold origami book markers. Additionally, they also played language games like The Preposition Song, Preposition Scavenger Hunt, Who’s Who using Adjectives, I’m a Synonym You’re an Antonym and Throw the Opinion (where students were scaffold on the use of prepositions, adjectives, synonyms and antonyms). We hope they have enjoyed the activities.

Date: 6 December 2017 Time: 8.30 am – 5 pm Venue: Seminar Room 3, Block D05 A total number of 23 primary school students ranging from 7 to 12 years old attended this school holiday program. This program was filled with fun educational activities. Students had the chance to creatively decorate cupcakes, made scrumptious choc chip cookies from scratch, easy peasy quiche and fruit kebabs. In between, they also played language games like Word Match, Guess the Meaning, Phrasal Verbs and Charades. We hope they have enjoyed the activities.
Date: 6/12/2017 Time: 9 am – 4 pm (Suspended Meal started at 10 am) Venue: Seminar Room 2, Block D06 Participants had the opportunity to check their Body Mass Index (BMI), cholesterol and blood sugar level, and also symptoms for future chronic diseases. This was followed by Dr. Sya’rani’s talk on health awareness. Dr. Sya’rani serves as a medical doctor for the Pusat Kesihatan, UTM. In conjunction with OSHE Day, the last Suspended Meal for 2017 was also held at the same venue. A total of 100 packs of food and drinks were given away to those who came. We hope to see the students again next semester!
