This is #pride2020 in my heart. 🦋🌈
Been spending the afternoon going through 15-plus years of Pride photos and reminiscing about all the joyful, hilarious, colorful, wild times with all you beautiful people! (This was back in 2011! @veronicaklaus took my breath away with all those pink balloons behind her.) Been sending photos from the way-back machine to friends all over, been sweet to recharge shared memories. Pride is such a huge family reunion—I know we all miss being in community, but our love is greater and stronger than a quarantine! With all my love from afar. 💋😷 Stay healthy, stay safe, and keep shouting and showing up for the much-needed change and movement happening right now. We are family. All Black Lives Matter! Trans Lives Matter! Fight for the SF values we hold dear: equality, joyful acceptance, safety, elevation, expression, liberation, celebration. Shine on.✨ Happy 50th Pride. 🌈💖 . #pride #sfpride #sanfranciscopride #pridemonth #lgbtpride #lgbtqiapride #lgbtqiaplus #pride🌈 #pride2020 #pride50 #veronicaklaus #transisbeautiful #blacktranslivesmatter #translivesmatter #pridewasariot #queersforblacklivesmatter #loveislove #lovewins
There is a restaurant that has an altar to the chef-owner’s ancestors at its center, with such timeworn, cast-iron pots and pans as its base. A place where she serves you her grandmother’s cold cucumber salad, with little slivers of ice, and tender leaves of Caribbean oregano 🌿 she grew in her backyard. A place famous for skillet-fried chicken (also from grandma) that is always so unfailingly, shatteringly perfect, with a tangy hot sauce that wakes up the back and sides of your mouth and makes you flare your nostrils. Juicy Gulf jerk shrimp 🦐 that keep that heat stoked and burning, and only the Creole margarita with mezcal, falernum, and orgeat can cool it down just-so. Oxtails so deep with flavor and time. There is only one place like this, and that is @missolliesoakland, which flows from the powerful heart and life and story and skills of our Bajan healer-queen, Sarah Kirnon.💖 Sitting at outside tables in the warm Oakland Friday afternoon, watching her guests sway as they eat her food (matching my own wiggle and toes tapping like a happy child), to joyfully feast on this truly, deeply soulful food with my dear @engvinny across the table from me, such a precious moment. Ever-grateful for everything Sarah does to keep the fires and candles lit in this place that brings us such happiness and connection, a charging station for her adoring family-community in the heart of Old Oakland. Thank you. 🙏✨ Sarah’s grandmother, Miss Ollie, is with us all at the table. . See Black women. Hear Black women. Trust Black women. Love Black women. Protect Black women. Pay Black women.
This morning’s MsG’s McMuffin. With a lil’ ‘nduja spread in there, heh heh. (Just wish I had some of the original’s hash browns, those are the best.)
Oh hell yes, this ad hoc pasta dish is going into the permanent playlist. Sautéed onion, garlic, ground turkey, a huge scoop of @tuttocalabria rose marina (Calabrese chiles 🌶 with little fishies 🐟), chopped broccolini, tomato paste, sliced grape tomatoes, and then chicken broth, and left to cook with a lid on while the rigatoni boiled. Saucy! Finished with Parmigiano and fresh basil. I just blew myself a chef’s kiss. Mwah! 👩🍳💋
Exquisite canelés and nougat cookie 🍪 from @ledixsept for the @bakersagainstracism box made my Saturday sweet! ✨✨ 100% of profits went to @eastoaklandcollective. 👏👏 You can now find some of these goodies and more for pre-ordering and pickup at @misterjius on Wed–Thu: look under “friends” at jiushoho.com.
At the end of an intense week of work, it was such a treat to get together with dear friends on their back patio and have dinner magically delivered ⚡️from @comestible.catering. Every week, they put together a different menu (from Italian-influenced to Japanese bento to American BBQ) that feeds four for just $50 (!), and delivery is $10 (or you can pick it up in Oakland). We had buttermilk-fried chicken, “creamed” corn with tarragon, a tasty kale Caesar, fork-crushed new potato salad, dilly beans, and strawberry 🍓 biscuits for dessert. Everything was well-prepared and seasoned and fresh, although we did zhoosh the croutons a bit and were glad there were just three of us hungry adults because the chicken portion would have been a little petite. But still, we had *plenty* of sides left over and no dishes to do, leaving more time for laughs (thanks to the @calexo.co) and conversation over bubbles 🥂. Check out their weekly menu (Fourth of July is coming up!) and they have a bunch of additional items you can stock your fridge with. I also appreciate their charitable and zero-waste approach. 🙏 Thanks for feeding us so generously and abundantly, chef Mikey!
Now, there is very little pasta I’d actually order for takeout/delivery, but gnocchi, well, they can go the distance. The hand-rolled gnocchi from @ristorantemilanosf come in a tomato, Gorgonzola, and basil sauce that is a classic for a reason. I’m talking over 30 years, people! 🤩✨ Ditto their excellent tiramisù, which tastes unflinchingly of espresso and rum. This should all fix any bad/sad/not rad day. And look at that, wines are 50% off 🥂🍷. You can even dine alfresco outside the restaurant now, and eat their tonnarelli or fettuccine on-site! Buon appetito!
It’s pretty fabulous to have @onemarketsf’s over-the-top prime rib dinner at home, available for takeout or delivery Wed–Fri! (It’s big enough for two meals! 👀) That crusty prime rib with au jus and horseradish cream is pure heaven (I love dunking the popover into the au jus, heh heh 👹), plus creamed spinach, even creamier mashed potatoes, and Bradley’s butterscotch pudding for dessert, all for $45! And I can’t forget their wedge salad, which is one of the City’s best, loaded with bacon and Pt. Reyes blue (my pic is just a half-portion—as I was saying...I ate the other half as part of a second meal). You can opt for their decadent cedar-planked fresh king salmon 🐟, sooooo rich✨, with salsa verde and all the sides and dessert for $39. (I ate my leftover salmon portion in an omelet the next day, with the salsa verde on top! Breakfast of champions!) There are cocktails for two, wine and 🍾 for half-off✨, cheeses, caviar, and get ready for their Fourth of July BBQ next week! 🎆 . #onemarket #onemarketsf #primerib #primeribdinner #kingsalmon #cedarplank #creamedspinach #mashedpotatoes #wedgesalad #bluecheesedressing #bluecheese #ptreyesblue #butterscotchpudding #sftakeout #sfdelivery #tablehopperathome
The past three weeks, we hit pause on recording the On the Fly podcast to honor and show respect to the #BlackLivesMatter movement, to pay close attention to and listen and learn from the many Black voices rising up. One of our city’s longtime culinary figureheads reached out to connect, and I’m grateful to present today’s episode (➡️ bit.ly/ontheflypodcast) with Jay Foster (@farmerbrownsf), a well-known San Francisco chef and restaurateur who has been feeding us with heart and intention in his authentically cool and soulful establishments for the past 18 years. Jay has fought hard for the disappearing Black San Francisco, and now he’s part of its list of casualties: he’s one of our few Black chefs, and with the closure of Farmerbrown and his most-recent project in the Fillmore last fall, @islavidasf, we’ve lost one of our city’s few Black restaurateurs. Jay has been trying to take a break from the grind of disadvantaged ownership and work for others for a change. In a city where upper-level restaurant managers and executives are a valuable asset, in our interview, you’ll hear his discouraging experience that further revealed a racist system designed to undervalue him. What is a San Francisco without Black executives, and Black-owned restaurants, and diverse places for the community to gather? What happens when our keepers of the flame, of our city’s African American heritage and traditions and cuisine and vibrant history, are continually being blown out? You’ll hear Jay’s firsthand account of what happens when we don’t do enough to elevate instead of erase BIPOC culture and presence. . Photo 📸: @sheaevansphoto . 🎙➡️ bit.ly/ontheflypodcast .
