Re-branded! Local youth-focused social enterprise Digilab Tooting has changed name to Shapeways.io @shapeways.io to better reflect the way that it’s helping to shape the all-round lives of local youngsters. Launched by young entrepreneurs Obed Yeboah & Samson Opayemi back in the summer of 2017, Shapeways has been working closely with local schools and youth organisations, teaching youngsters (many of whom have had a difficult start in life) core technical skills such as website coding, Photoshop and video editing, all of which will enhance their career prospects in later life. But what started out back then as mainly a digital educational hub, has turned into something far more wide-reaching. Obed tells us more: “We’re now doing more than providing digital skills to young people – we work on confidence building, helping them to deliver presentations, take meetings with potential clients, pitch their skills and teach their peers. We’re shaping their ways of doing things and changing their perspectives through technology. The digital skills have almost now become an attachment – a tool for our students to see their progress in real life. .io simply stands for input and output. In a coding context, everything is an input or an output – you write the code, preview it and the output is on the page. But this also perfectly illustrates us sharing our knowledge as an input to the students which they then take and becomes an output not only by the way they showcase and use that knowledge through the projects they undertake but also through them then teaching their peers what they’ve learned. A prime example is a couple of our young people teaching their newly-acquired skills to other young people at Phipps Bridge Community Centre in Merton. Shapeways.io is based out of the @tridentcentre off Mitcham Road and has some exciting projects ahead.
