Did I have a favorite day this year? I went through all my photos and while there were some good days at the beginning of 2020, I didn’t feel like it represented this year well. I remember soul cleansing moments in this woodland tub. I got to experience the woods in several seasons. I found some relief from the 2020 turmoil out at our airstream retreat. Yes, there were good days. Wonderful, lovely days. This morning I felt like doing nothing and also felt like these days I haven’t been getting anything done. So I sat down to paint and to catch up on the prompts that seemed so, I don’t know, uninteresting to me. That’s how I feel about most things these days. I feel like I’m sitting around waiting and waiting. For what? I don’t know. For the snow? Just something? It’s that floaty liminal time when the year is not quite over and the next one hasn’t yet begun. And so I sat down to paint. In time I eventually got to that space that I hear other painters talk about. Just keep painting until you feel like painting is what you need to do. Yah. Yesterday evening the music shifted to the winter 2020 playlist and I was transported to the beforetimes. That carefree winter before the pandemic. I remembered talking about going to a live show when this particular band was expected to come to town in March. And it felt so good. It made me feel the possibility of life. It gave me hope that life will feel more exuberant than ever before. More full of gratitude. I asked the Big D: Have you ever had turkey with bacon wrapped around it? Is that weird? His response: Have you ever heard of anyone that turned down turkey with bacon wrapped around? I think the bigger question is: Did thanksgiving ever even happen if it’s not posted on Instagram? In any case, my turkey roulade was a hit. It’s a once a century thing so I’m glad it worked out.
