This is my first week back at work after a magical, challenging, life-changing maternity leave. Thanks postpartum feelings for the roller coaster, and thanks Beau for your patience and compassion. * * * Part of me is thankful for four months focused 100% on my new son; part of me is bitter that America’s maternity (and paternity) leave policies are so behind what I witnessed my British and European friends enjoy when we lived in London. Four months is more than most parents have to bond with their newborn, and yet it’s barely long enough to recover physically from pregnancy and birth, let alone nurture and raise a tiny new human. * * * Pre-baby Jen had a lot of uneducated ideas about motherhood, one of them being that maternity leave was going to be a break to recharge and reset, maybe even travel internationally. Cue the laughter of experienced parents and post-baby Jen. 😂 * * * Maternity leave was NO JOKE. For the first six weeks I could hardly walk when I wasn’t sitting on my foam donut. We were at the pediatrician’s office sometimes once a week, moving nonstop in a rocker, stroller or with a baby carrier to survive the nightly witching hours, waking up every two hours to feed another human all night, and panic reading baby advice books. There were many fun and joyful moments, but equally as many rough times. Of course I am OBSESSED with Camden, but at times I mourned the freedom of life pre-baby. * * * I don’t share this to attract pity or scare future moms. I simply think it’s only fair to share the lows if I’m going to put the highs on here. Being vulnerable is part of this new experience. Life as a new mom is epic. And sometimes it’s not. So let’s bring this full circle: maternity leave is hard, far too short, and incredibly eye-opening. * * * Respect and love to all the moms that have gone before me, all my friends who took time to check on and empathize with me, and of course Beau, Laura, and my Mom and Dad. You have kept me afloat these last few months. When they said “it takes a village”, they weren’t kidding. ❤️
