A new article shows the environmental benefits of clothing libraries. But to achieve environmental gains, the article quantitatively demonstrate the importance of substantially increasing the garment service life and considering the logistics. The logistics is important because the risk of problem shifting: increased customer transportation can completely offset the benefits gained from reduced production. This means that the location of clothing libraries matter and that collaborative consumption may not be suitable for all kinds of clothing. In the study, life cycle assessment (LCA) is used to explore the environmental performance of clothing libraries, as one of the possible ways in which collaborative consumption can be implemented, and advantages and disadvantages are compared to conventional business models.
A new study have been recently published which can help future LCA studies to provide relevant guidance towards environmentally benign chemical management in the textile industry. The article, written by Sandra Roos and Christina Jönsson from Swerea IVF and Hanna Holmqvist and Rickard Arvidsson from Chalmers, presents both a strategy for how to provide a complete set of toxicity characterisation factors for a given list of substances and a set of characterisation factors for common textile-related substances. The data source selection strategy provides a structured and transparent way of calculating additional factors for textile chemicals with USEtox.
The work with Circular Fibre Initiative is progressing, supporting the Ellen MacArthur team with insights and publications, as well as taking part in productive workshop in London June 14th. Great enthusiasm and impressive commitment by stakeholders on how to design the roadmap for the systemic transformation that is needed ahead! The systemic perspective is key in order to ensure sustainable choices across the value chain.
Efforts to decrease the environmental impact of today’s clothing industry across the entire process of production, purchase, maintenance, and disposal can be driven by either suppliers or consumers. Changing the behavior of the latter, however, requires an understanding of current clothing consumption patterns—a currently under-researched area. A new article in Sustainability therefore shed more light on these patterns in the purchase, use and maintenance, and discard phases by analyzing unique data on 4617 adult consumers.
