FiFTEEN LOWEN Lowen is a year ten student with big plans for his future! He has been dreaming of cycling at an international level since he was just ten years old and training to get there ever since. While many of his peers are soundly asleep, Lowen is often found riding 50 or 60 kms before school. He is not alone. There are many locals who join him, including his dad and his coach, former national cyclist, Brad Linfield. Lowen’s passion for cycling has recently found him begin to research ways to make cycling more accessible to others in our region. This positive, gentle and engaging teenager also works part time to help pay for the extras that he needs to enhance his training. #Bunbury #cycle #meloveloau #southwestcycleclub #Bunbury #kateheaslip_photography @naturalandactive #the0to100project

SIXTY SIX GUS So many words could be said about this quick-witted, kind, deep-thinking and remarkable man. Gus arrived in the South West 1983 and immediately began working towards making life better for those less fortunate than himself. It is here that he and his wife Jeni raised their family and gave their hearts and souls to the local community. In 2014, Gus became the first person in his family to attend university and complete a PhD. Gus is also the first ECU South West recipient of a PhD in Writing. He is interested in people and they are interested in him; Gus has friends of all ages and has been a vibrant part of the university community. His first novel, The Wounded Sinner, is due to be released by Magabala Books in the new year. What an achievement for the young lad who, all those years ago, refused to go to school! Despite all these wonderful things, life is very challenging and tenuous for Gus. Diagnosed six months ago with Cerebellar Degeneration the decline in Gus’s health has been remarkable. Sadly he has lost the ability to walk and to sit up unaided. He has lost his independence. Recently Gus became a resident of a local nursing home. He is being well cared for but is very aware of how short life is. Gus is not afraid to die, but he is also not keen to say goodbye to Jeni, his six children, or his seventeen grandchildren. So, for now, Gus is doing his darnedest to hang on to his dignity, maintain his fighting spirit and continue to write his poetry. #sixtysix #bunbury #ecusouthwest #cerebraldegeneration #heartofbunbury #edithcowanuni #writingwa #thebookincubator #the0to100project #kateheaslip_photography @gushendersonsnr
