Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.” – Ibn Battuta • The Kerala Backwaters are a network of interconnected canals, rivers, lakes and inlets, a labyrinthine system formed by more than 900 km of waterways, and sometimes compared to the American Bayou. • When on a houseboat yesterday, we found out that the main lively hood of the people living along the canals comes from shells they collect from nearby lakes. The shells are then cooked, flesh is eaten and the rest made into calcium carbonate powder. • In other news, we are not stuck anymore! Michael went and bought the bus tickets to Madurai from an agent our host took him to. The @redbus_in app turned out to be a waste of time. • Piece of advice: when you want to come travelling in India, make getting a local phone number your first priority. Ps! Even then you won't be able to book buses online as you won't have a local bank account.🙈 • Have you experienced similar problems anywhere in the world?
Kerala backwaters idyll. • We went on a three hour houseboat cruise at the famous Kerala backwaters today. • One man with a bamboo stick at the front and one at the back is all they need to navigate the narrow canals. • The scenery was mind blowing, a must for anyone in Kerala! Just wish we'd saw more wildlife although the villages at the waterfront were pretty cool too! • Not as much rubbish as I was expecting. All mostly around the villages..🤔 • In other news, we are stuck in Kerala as we don't have an Indian phone number to book bus tickets and we can't find a way around it. Can't take a train either as that would make us miss our flight. Travel agents look and feel dodgy.. Who wants to give us their phone number lol? Getting desperate.😰 • Have you been to Kerala?
Chinese fishing nets in Fort Kochi. • I wanted to come to Kerala for just one experience-the backwaters. We met an Aussie couple in Goa recommending a stay in Fort Kochi while we were in Kerala and so we did. • During our strolls along the water I had seen many beautiful photos of, I was shocked to say the least about the amount of rubbish e v e r y w h e r e! • Despite the bins being provided every couple of metres, I saw e v e r y o n e throwing rubbish on the ground. The result was appalling. Not that I haven't seen rubbish everywhere when in India, I just didn't expect it to hit so hard. • Going on a tour of the backwaters tomorrow, I don't even know why I keep hoping that I'd see a different sight, but I really do! • India is perhaps the dirtiest country I've been to. Everywhere else they at least try and clean up some of it. 💔 • If you are from India, I'd like to know your views on this! How can we help? • What have you done for the environment?
Tropics for days..🌴 • We hired a scooter yesterday to explore some of the other beaches around South Goa. • That's my favourite photo of yesterday, taken at a busy Colva beach. It was crazy seeing so many people in the water all at once! • Women were in the water with their saris, all covered up while men were wearing speedos lol! • Despite the water being hotter than in our swimming pool, I think I'd rather enjoy the clean pool.😜 • Last day in Goa while we wait for yet another 12 hour train to Kerala. Very excited for the backwaters! • Have you been to Kerala? What's the best boat company for a few hours on the water?
Been missing the beaches! • We are staying in a quieter area in Goa and as it's the end of the tourist season, we had the beach almost all to ourselves. • We spent hours in one of the shacks, drinking fresh coconuts and 1$ beers. The water is the warmest I've ever felt ocean to be. • Relaxing and looking out into the water while time was standing still, what more do you need to relax? • Renting a scooter today to discover what else Goa has to offer. Bring it on! • How do you feel about renting scooters/motorbikes in countries with crazy traffic?
Such is life! • We made it to Goa last night after yet another very long 12 hour train journey. We are staying in Benaulim, which is considered the quieter area of the tourist mecca and couldn't be any happier! • The accommodation is fantastic and we finally have a pool and views out on the fields where buffalos roam. • Already extended for another night! Three nights here is costing us what two nights were in Mumbai, so win win! • Off to the beach now! What are you doing today?
