Service Flags, Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Concord, MA. . . This part of the cemetery is full of Civil War vets, a few Minutemen, and a handful of fire fighters (red flags), the flags giving a good (and chilling!) reminder that social hierarchy can follow us well into death. I only saw a flag of honor on one woman’s grave (a famous woman who served as a Union nurse—her fame perhaps prompted the recognition of her service?). Most women’s markers described the deceased only as “his wife”, despite the fact that many lived into their 80s and doubtless had many tales to tell. Of course we bar people from garnering prestige and power when we bar them from positions of honor, at the time of these people often meaning military service, the law, and the clergy. But we also bar them and their contributions from history and from the collective consciousness of future generations. It’s a way to erase and demean entire segments of society. Our government is doing that now to transgender and undocumented soldiers, and the ugliness of that effort was made more obvious to me by this peaceful setting and these charming little flags.
Author’s Ridge Grave Offerings, Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Concord, MA. . . After a hot tip from @judywestonhoskins, I had to see these offerings for myself (and if you think I was the only one living it up on Saturday night at ye olde famous graves, you’re wrong, friend, there were at least 12 others getting drunk on tidbits about Nathaniel Hawthorne*.) Pens and rocks and flowers and pine cones for Louisa May Alcott (also the only woman I saw honored with a flag, presumably due to her nurse service for the Union Army during the Civil War). Pennies and a jaunty pencil for Nathaniel. Pine cones and pencil sentinels and flowers for Henry David Thoreau (just pine cones for little sis Sophia and other family members, the only kin I saw whose markers also had offerings). And though Ralph Waldo Emerson’s distinctive boulder marker is currently behind a fence, that did not deter the leavers of rocks. . . * Overheard another visitor tell her friend that Nathaniel changed the spelling of his last name to disassociate himself from an ancestor who was a judge during the Salem Witch Trials, which story I confirmed via Wikipedia, and which telling confirmed my admiration for the smarts and curiosity and love of fact-sharing of New Englanders.
Offerings left on Paul Revere’s Gravestone, Granary Burying Ground, Boston. . . An informal guidebook handed out by a generous, donations-only entrepreneur at the gate of the cemetery speculates these are left as “good-willed mimicry”, possibly imitating a Jewish tradition of placing stones in a cairn on the top of a burial site, or maybe people leave pennies to reflect Revere’s profession. . . [re The entrepreneur: I used to live in Boston, so I know for a fact that one of its shining characteristics is great respect for history and learning, and a sincere eagerness to share both.] . #boston #freedomtrail #cemetery #paulrevere #offering #pennies #gravesite #gravestone

Neighborhood Appreciation, Blue-Grey House, Farragut near La Salle. (Plus Cat.) . I love the blue-on-grey-on-stripes-on-lines of this house (see the door frame, and the splotch of blue on the step), but this time the tabby called for B&W, where no one can hide, and I couldn’t choose, so here are both versions. Mom’s Chinese Dogs, 2018. . . This duo was the one thing I was desperate to find in my mom’s belongings when I went to sort through her stuff after she died in 2015. . When I was growing up, we had these bookends on the pass-through between the kitchen and dining room in our townhouse in suburban Pennsylvania. There was nothing else in the house like them. I considered them the height of sophistication and breeding (that’s a pun) until I said something like that to my mom, and she laughed and said they were cheap knickknacks, but she liked them. I confirmed this years later when I walked through Chinatown in Boston and saw a store full of them. It was both shocking and comforting to see my family’s private, incongruous knickknack exoticism for sale by the dozens. .
